Ola Electric Disrupts Energy Market: Ola Shakti BESS Deliveries Begin; 5.2kWh Variant Gets BIS Nod
Ola Electric has officially transitioned from an EV giant to a full stack energy player. The company today announced the commencement of deliveries for its flagship Ola Shakti 9.1kWh, India’s first residential Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) powered by indigenous 4680 Bharat Cells.
In a move that solidifies its market position, Ola also secured BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification for the 3kW/5.2kWh configuration, making both variants fully road ready for a nationwide rollout.
Key Highlights of Ola Shakti Launch:
-
Indigenous Tech: Powered by the homegrown 4680 Bharat Cells, engineered and manufactured at the Ola Gigafactory.
-
Certification Milestone: Both 9.1kWh and 5.2kWh models now comply with IS 16242 (PART1): 2025 safety standards.
-
Market Positioning: A high tech, lithium-ion alternative to traditional lead acid inverters and diesel generators.
-
Smart Features: 0 ms instant changeover, app-based monitoring, and IP67 rated weatherproofing.
Why Ola Shakti is a Game Changer for Indian Homes
Unlike conventional inverters that suffer from slow charging and short lifespans, Ola Shakti offers 98% energy efficiency and a significantly higher Depth of Discharge (DoD).
"Ola Shakti is more than a product it is a cornerstone of India’s journey toward energy self reliance," stated an Ola Electric spokesperson. "We are bringing automotive grade safety and smart, decentralized power to every Indian home."
The system is designed to handle heavy loads, including air conditioners, induction cookers, and farm pumps, providing up to 1.5 hours of backup on full load. Its wide input voltage range (170V–270V) also acts as a stabilizer, protecting sensitive electronics from India's frequent voltage fluctuations.
Impact on the BESS Market in India
The launch of Ola Shakti places Ola Electric in direct competition with legacy players like Luminous and Amaron. By leveraging its existing 3,000+ retail stores and service network, Ola aims to scale without the typical "new entrant" infrastructure hurdles.
With the global BESS market projected to grow exponentially, Ola’s focus on the 4680 cell platform allows them to offer a vertically integrated solution from the cell to the software giving them a distinct edge in pricing and performance.
