Ola Electric Rolls Out First ‘Ola Shakti’ BESS: A Game Changer for India’s Energy Storage

In a landmark move for India’s green energy sector, Ola Electric has officially rolled out the first unit of Ola Shakti, its indigenous residential Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), from the Krishnagiri Gigafactory.

This manufacturing milestone, announced on January 12, marks the company’s pivot beyond electric vehicles (EVs) and into the home energy market, leveraging its proprietary 4680 Bharat Cell platform.

What is Ola Shakti?

Ola Shakti is a smart, residential energy storage solution designed to replace traditional lead acid inverters and diesel generators. Fully engineered and manufactured in India, it serves as a portable, on demand power resource for modern households, farms, and small businesses.

According to an Ola Electric spokesperson, the product represents a "fundamental shift" in how Indians will access and consume energy, moving towards a decentralized and clean energy model.

Key Features & Specifications

Built on Ola’s core technology DNA, the Shakti BESS offers automotive grade safety and smart features that set it apart from conventional power backups.

  • Technology: Powered by indigenous 4680 Bharat Cells.

  • Zero Downtime: Features an instant 0 ms changeover time, ensuring uninterrupted power for sensitive appliances.

  • Durability: IP67 rated battery pack (dust and waterproof), designed for Indian monsoon conditions.

  • Smart Connectivity: Users can track real time energy flow, battery status, and usage patterns via the Ola app.

  • Voltage Protection: Operates across a wide input range (200V-240V), eliminating the need for external stabilizers.

Why This Matters for the Indian Market

The rollout of Ola Shakti is significant for the Indian energy storage market for three reasons:

  1. Localisation: It is the first BESS fully designed and manufactured domestically, reducing reliance on imported battery tech.

  2. Cost Efficiency: With zero maintenance costs and a long lifecycle compared to lead acid batteries, it promises a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

  3. Grid Independence: It empowers users to store solar or grid energy and use it on demand, stabilizing the grid during peak hours.

Future Outlook

With the Gigafactory now churning out BESS units alongside EV batteries, Ola Electric is aggressively scaling up its 4680 Bharat Cell platform. This move positions the company as a comprehensive energy player, competing directly with global energy storage giants.
