Ola Electric Roadster X+ Gets Green Light: 500 Km Range & In-House Battery Tech Certified
In a major development for the Indian electric two-wheeler market, Ola Electric has officially received government certification for its flagship motorcycle, the Roadster X+ (9.1 kWh). The approval paves the way for the company to begin commercial deliveries of what is touted to be India’s first electric motorcycle powered by an in-house developed battery cell.
The certification was granted by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT) under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989. This milestone validates Ola’s shift towards deep vertical integration, utilizing its indigenous 4680 Bharat Cell technology.
500 Km Range: Breaking the Barrier for Rural Adoption
The headline feature of the Roadster X+ is its industry-leading range. Equipped with a 9.1 kWh battery pack, the motorcycle promises a range of up to 500 km on a single charge.
This massive range is strategically aimed at breaking the "metro-city barrier." By offering distance capabilities comparable to or exceeding petrol motorcycles, Ola Electric is targeting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities—regions traditionally dominated by ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles due to a lack of frequent charging infrastructure.
"The Roadster X+ sets a new benchmark in electric motorcycling... making long-distance and inter-city riding practical beyond urban centres," the company stated in its release.
First Indian Bike with 4680 Bharat Cell Technology
The Roadster X+ is the first vehicle to commercially deploy Ola’s homegrown 4680 Bharat Cell. This larger, high-energy-density cylindrical cell is key to packing 9.1 kWh of energy into a motorcycle form factor while maintaining thermal stability.
Ola confirmed that this platform will not be limited to the Roadster series. The 4680 Bharat Cell platform will be extended across their scooter portfolio and the upcoming Ola Shakti platform, standardizing their technology stack from cells to battery packs to vehicles.
Safety and Rigorous Testing
Ahead of the launch, the Roadster X+ underwent comprehensive validation. The certification process by iCAT covered:
-
Functional Safety & Braking: Ensuring reliability on Indian roads.
-
Environmental Testing: Including Gradeability and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).
Furthermore, the battery pack itself has received ARAI certification under the stringent AIS-156 Amendment 4 norms. It successfully cleared critical safety tests including water immersion, thermal runaway (fire safety), and mechanical shock, addressing common consumer concerns regarding EV battery safety.
What Next for Buyers?
With CMVR certification secured, Ola Electric has announced that deliveries for the Roadster X+ will commence shortly. For the Indian market, this marks the entry of a high-performance electric motorcycle that claims to solve the biggest hurdle to EV adoption: Range Anxiety.
