Ather EL01 Spotted Testing: Ather’s Most Affordable Electric Scooter Coming Soon

The Indian electric vehicle market is bracing for a major shift as Bengaluru-based EV giant Ather Energy prepares to enter the high-volume budget segment. Recent spy shots of a heavily camouflaged test mule, internally codenamed the Ather EL01, have surfaced online, confirming that the company's most affordable electric scooter is nearing production.

Positioned to sit below the recently launched Ather Rizta, the EL01 is designed to be a practical, family-oriented solution for the mass market.

The All-New Modular EL Platform

The most significant development with this upcoming model is the debut of Ather’s "EL" platform. Moving away from the premium aluminum spaceframe used in the 450 series, the EL01 utilizes a modular steel unibody construction. This strategic shift allows Ather to significantly lower production costs while maintaining the sharp handling and build quality the brand is known for.

The platform is designed to be highly versatile, capable of supporting battery sizes ranging from 2 kWh to 5 kWh, which could lead to multiple variants catering to different range requirements and price points.

Design and Features: Practicality Meets Tech

Despite the heavy camouflage seen in Bengaluru, several key design elements align with Ather’s design patents filed last year

  • Family-First Ergonomics : The scooter features a spacious flat floorboard, a long single-piece seat for comfortable pillion riding, and a sturdy rear grab handle.

  • Distinct Lighting : A handlebar-mounted headlight is complemented by a wide LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) stretching across the front apron.

  • Wheel Setup : In a departure from previous models, the EL01 appears to sport a larger 14-inch front alloy wheel (with disc brake) and a 12-inch rear wheel (with drum brake), likely to improve ride quality over rougher city roads.

  • Smart Features : Expected to run on AtherStack 7.0, the EL01 will likely retain a 7-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity, navigation, and integrated onboard charging.

Expected Range and Performance

While official specifications are under wraps, industry insights suggest a real-world range of approximately 100 km to 120 km on a single charge. The EL01 is expected to use a direct-drive, swingarm-mounted motor, optimized for city commuting rather than high-speed performance.

Competition and Launch Timeline

Ather is positioning the EL01 to compete directly with the entry level variants of the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and Ola S1 X. By targeting the sub ₹1 lakh segment, Ather aims to capitalize on the rapid consumer shift toward affordable electric mobility.

The Ather EL01 is expected to make its official debut during the 2026 festive season (October–December). Production is slated to take place at Ather’s upcoming manufacturing facility in Maharashtra.
