IIT Madras graduates Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain established the EV manufacturing business Ather Energy, which is based in Bengaluru. It was established in 2013 and debuted its first product, an electric scooter called the Ather 450, in 2018. Equipped with cutting-edge features such as a TFT touchscreen that allows for Over The Air (OTA) updates and smartphone connection for navigation, the Ather 450 was also the first electric smart scooter designed and manufactured in India.

It's noteworthy to note that Hero MotoCorp, who initially invested in Ather Energy back in 2016, continues to be a partner in the company. Hero MotoCorp increased its shareholding in Ather Energy from 31.27 per cent to 34.58 per cent in July 2020 with an investment of Rs 84 crore, making it the largest shareholder.

Ather was first confined to Bengaluru and then, shortly after, Chennai to make sure that the fast-charging infrastructure was correctly installed in both cities. This also assisted Ather in meeting demand because, in the beginning, at least, its production was not as vast as that of other producers.
