Ola Electric Achieves Historic Milestone: India's First OEM to Certify In-House Developed Rare-Earth-Free Ferrite Motor
Ola Electric, India’s largest pure-play electric vehicle (EV) company, today announced a significant breakthrough in sustainable EV technology, becoming the first automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in India to receive government certification for its in-house developed rare-earth-free ferrite motor.
This pivotal achievement, granted by the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC) in Tamil Nadu, marks a crucial step toward de-risking the EV supply chain by eliminating the dependency on imported motors that use rare-earth permanent magnets. The certification follows rigorous performance verification and mandatory motor power tests as per the Ministry of Road Transport’s notified AIS 041 standards.
Matching Performance, Sustainable Future
The certified ferrite motor, first unveiled at Ola Electric's annual ‘Sankalp 2025’ event in August, successfully matched the net power performance of rare-earth permanent magnet motors across both the 7kW and 11kW variants.
"Delivering on the promise made at 'Sankalp 2025', this certification validates that our ferrite motor provides comparable efficiency, performance, and durability to motors relying on rare-earth elements," an Ola Electric spokesperson stated. "Crucially, this indigenous development will dramatically lower manufacturing costs and secure the supply chain against global fluctuations, paving the way for more affordable and sustainable mobility."
Strategic Impact on the EV Market
This government approval enables Ola Electric to immediately begin integrating the new ferrite motor across its entire product lineup. The transition is expected to further enhance the affordability and sustainability quotient of Ola's vehicles for millions of Indian consumers.
By vertically integrating technology and manufacturing, Ola Electric is driving the development of India's EV ecosystem. With its motors now being produced domestically without reliance on geopolitically sensitive rare-earth materials, the company solidifies its position at the forefront of the 'Made in India' initiative, ensuring the long-term stability and growth of the country’s burgeoning electric vehicle industry.
