In a significant move to promote child road safety, Ather Energy, India’s leading electric two-wheeler manufacturer, has partnered with the Bengaluru Traffic Police to distribute 100 ISI-certified Ather Junior helmets.

The initiative marks the occasion of National Road Safety Month, aimed at raising awareness about the critical need for safety gear for young pillion riders. The Bengaluru Traffic Police will oversee the distribution of these helmets across the city to encourage the early adoption of safe riding habits among families.

Addressing a Critical Safety Gap for Children

The collaboration comes at a crucial time when two wheeler safety remains a major concern in India. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Annual Report 2023, over 31% of total road accident fatalities accounting for 54,568 lives involved riders and pillion passengers not wearing helmets.

Furthermore, a July 2024 survey by the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG) highlighted that helmet usage among children is alarmingly low. Parents often cite the lack of well fitting, high quality helmets for minors as a primary barrier.

The Ather Junior helmet range is designed specifically to address this gap. Catering to children aged 3 to 9, the helmets combine an ISI-certified build with vibrant designs (Astro, Big Bee, and Unicorn) to appeal to young riders. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), proper helmet use can reduce the risk of death by over six times and brain injury by up to 74%.

Ather’s Commitment to ‘Family’ Safety

Speaking on the initiative, Saurabh Sharma, Head of Marketing, Ather Energy, stated:

“Safety has always been a core principle in how we build at Ather. With Ather Junior helmets, we’re extending that commitment to children who ride as pillions. Through this initiative, we aim to raise awareness around child safety on two wheelers and help families build strong safety habits early.”

This CSR initiative aligns with Ather’s broader product strategy, particularly following the launch of the Ather Rizta, their family focused electric scooter. By promoting child specific safety gear, Ather is reinforcing its ecosystem for family commuters.

Beyond Helmets: Tech Led Safety Features

Ather Energy continues to integrate advanced safety technology across its EV portfolio, which includes the performance oriented 450 Series and the family centric Rizta. Key safety features currently deployed include:

  • FallSafe™: Automatically cuts off power if the scooter falls.

  • SkidControl™: Prevents wheel slippage on wet or uneven terrain.

  • Emergency Features: Crash Alerts that notify emergency contacts and Live Location Sharing for rider security.
