Ather Energy is officially expanding its horizons beyond electric scooters. On the sidelines of the recent Ather Konarc launch, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Swapnil Jain confirmed that the Bengaluru-based EV manufacturer is actively developing its first Ather electric motorcycle, slated for a market debut in the next three years.

While the brand has previously toyed with earlier timelines for an electric motorcycle, leadership has chosen to take a calculated, customer-first approach to ensure the product hits the right note in a highly passionate segment.

Why the Delay? Decoding the Emotional Appeal of Motorcycles

Addressing the media, Swapnil Jain highlighted that transitioning from scooters to motorcycles is far from a straightforward engineering step.

"The biggest challenge with electric motorcycles is not technical; it is about understanding customers really well. It's not as simple as a scooter, which is a bit more of a utility product. A motorcycle is a very emotional piece," Jain noted during the interaction.

Unlike utility-driven scooters meant primarily for daily commuting, motorcycles serve as a reflection of the owner's personal identity. Because of this psychological dynamic, Ather’s engineering and research teams have spent over a year closely studying rider preferences, varying body types, and regional riding habits before locking down a final design.

Performance Target: The 150cc–300cc ICE Segment

Ather has narrowed down its performance target for the upcoming electric bike. Rather than starting at the entry-level commuter segment, the company aims to challenge internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles in the 150cc to 300cc bracket.

This positioning places the upcoming Ather EV motorcycle squarely against popular enthusiast and sports-commuter ICE motorcycles in India, a segment that demands high torque, aggressive styling, and robust thermal management.

Engineering Strategy and Platform Development

Ather is taking a two-pronged structural approach to its electric motorcycle architecture, mirroring the methodology used during the development of its modular vehicle platforms.

• Independent Platform: The company is engineering a flexible platform capable of supporting a specialized range of battery packs and high-power motor outputs.

However, CEO Tarun Mehta and CTO Swapnil Jain later opted to prioritize strengthening the scooter portfolio—anchored by models like the flagship Ather Rizta and the newly introduced Konarc—before committing full resources to the motorcycle line.
