VinFast Sales Skyrocket 1600% in India as Tesla Stalls: Late 2025 EV Market Shake-up

The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is witnessing a dramatic shift in power dynamics as 2025 draws to a close. New data released, sourced from VAHAN and Telangana registries, reveals a startling trend - Vietnamese automaker VinFast is experiencing explosive growth, while global giant Tesla struggles to gain significant traction.

The sales figures from September to November 2025 highlight a market that is rapidly evolving, moving away from early hype and toward players who can deliver volume.

The VinFast Surge : A New Challenger Arrives

The most compelling story in the Q4 data is the unprecedented rise of VinFast. The Vietnamese manufacturer has managed to turn a quiet entry into a roar in just three months.

In September, VinFast recorded a modest 21 units sold. By November, that figure skyrocketed to 357 units—a staggering increase of over 1600% in just 60 days. This massive upward trajectory suggests successful model deliveries and rapidly growing brand acceptance in the competitive Indian market. VinFast has quickly moved from a niche player to a serious contender, overtaking Tesla by a wide margin.

Tesla's India Struggle Continues

In sharp contrast to its global dominance, Tesla’s performance in India remains surprisingly muted during this period. Despite immense brand recognition, Tesla's sales have stagnated, hovering in double digits.

The data shows Tesla selling 64 units in September, dipping to 40 in October, and recovering slightly to 48 in November. With only 152 total units sold over three months, Tesla is currently operating as a niche luxury player rather than a mass-market disruptor in India. The flatlining sales curve indicates significant hurdles, whether due to pricing, supply constraints, or stiff competition from Asian rivals.

Market Context : BYD Leads but Slips

While VinFast surges and Tesla stalls, current market leader BYD is seeing its own challenges. BYD remains the volume leader with 1,948 units sold over the three months—far ahead of its competitors.

However, BYD's trend line is pointing downward. Sales dropped from a high of 747 in September to 515 in November. While they still hold the lion's share of the market among these three, their grip is loosening as VinFast gains momentum.

As India heads into 2026, the EV landscape is far less predictable than many assumed. VinFast has proven that the market is hungry for alternatives, leaving Tesla with significant ground to make up.
