In a move to deploy 20,000 driverless taxi cabs or robotaxis, Uber, on Thursday, has partnered with Nuro, an autonomous vehicle startup and Lucid,  an electric vehicle manufacturer.

Under the collaboration, Nuro will engineer the autonomous driving in exchange for a multi-hundred-million-dollar investment. Meanwhile, Lucid will receive a $300 million investment from Uber to manufacture EVs equipped with the technology made by Nuro.

On Thursday, Lucid's shares surged 30%. Meanwhile, Uber's stock was slightly up.

Citing the CEO of Uber, Dara Khosrowshahi, CNBC reported, “We’re thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi program, purpose-built just for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world.”

In an interview with CNBC, Lucid interim CEO Marc Winterhoff called the partnership an opportunity for the EV maker to compete in a “completely new” addressable market it has yet to penetrate.
