The US election's result has observed bittersweet reactions from all over the world. Donald Trump has once again climbed up the presidential chair by riding a worldwide wave of “right” ideology. One such decision by the President-elect is to put a 25% tariff on all products imported into the US from Mexico and Canada and a 35% tariff on products from China. The Decision It is safe to say that the steps taken by Trump’s administration do represent the majoritarian will of the American people as he was already advocating for a 60 per cent tariff on imports from China, and 10-20 per cent on others. According to him, high tariffs will boost manufacturing in the US which will rebalance trade with other countries, and improve government finances. The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. Whereas, when it comes to pricing, it is highly unlikely that any Indian EV company will significantly change the cost of its EV due to this update.

Dua has more than thirty years of experience in brand building, digital transformation, and strategic leadership in a variety of businesses.&nbsp; In his previous position as Group CEO of Dish TV, Dua was important in a number of important projects, such as the company's merger with Videocon D2H, the adoption of digital transformation, and the reduction of its debt from more than 3,000 crores to debt-free status in 2023. Under his leadership, Dish TV won accolades including the Economic Times' Best Brand Award and pioneered innovations like hybrid set-top boxes. In addition, Dua has held senior positions with Hero MotoCorp, Gillette, Unilever, and OTE Group in Oman. During his time at Hero MotoCorp, he helped the company rebrand from Hero Honda to Hero and promoted sales and turnover growth. Recently, Suzuki Motor Corporation revealed the eVitara, a worldwide model made in India for the globe, in Milan, Italy. "With decades of automotive expertise, we have combined advanced electric technology with a customer-first approach to delivering something truly transformative," Maruti Suzuki Citing Partho Banerjee, India Senior Executive Officer, Marketing &amp; Sales, PTI reported.&nbsp; He further noted that the firm has long held the view that to encourage EV adoption, it must establish a comprehensive ecosystem that makes the process of owning a battery electric vehicle easier for consumers. Banerjee further said, "A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. To tackle this issue, we are committed to introducing a reliable and comprehensive EV ecosystem alongside the eVitara," PTI reported.&nbsp; According to him, this would include both home charging options and a statewide network of fast chargers that are accessible at Maruti Suzuki dealerships and service locations.

Nitin Gadkari, the union cabinet Minister of Road and Transport said on Thursday that the Indian electric vehicle industry has the ability to manufacture 10 times more than the current producing capacity of the market.&nbsp; While speaking at the 8th Catalyst Conference on Sustainability of the E-Vehicle Industry, also known as Ev expo 2024, Gadkari stated that the demand for EVs will only increase and now is the right moment for the business to thrive. Further, Gadkari mentions India’s capability to rise to the number 1 position in the automobile industry within the next five years. Currently, India is the third largest automobile industry of the world.

The auto component industry of India has overcome the fear and the initial scepticism to align with the EV transition, Vinnie Mehta, Director General of ACMA, said.&nbsp; Citing Mehta, Autocar professional, “Five to six years ago, there was a lot of apprehension, Nobody says anything anymore. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Automobile OEMs are no longer fearful of EV transition

With distribution agreements in Canada and Australia, Versinetic, a UK-based EV charger manufacturer has launched its LinkRay Distribution Partner Program. Under the program, distributors are provided with exclusive regional distribution rights, access to the company's EV charging technology, and training and technical assistance. LinkRay is a load-balancing controller of Verinetic which is specially manufactured for EV charging stations. Adjusting power delivery as per the required demand, the controller can distribute power among several charging points at the same time. According to the business, it saves charging times, ensures consistent performance across many EVs, and optimises electrical resources to lower installation and operating costs. Installers of AC and DC chargers in multi-unit buildings, including office spaces, apartment complexes and condominiums, can use it. To facilitate remote control and real-time monitoring of regions with numerous meters, switchboards, or transformers, Versinetic also intends to implement Link Aggregation, a new scalable feature that tiers multiple LinkRay devices. With Delhi leading the path of EV penetration, the adoption of electric vehicles in India is booming, a report by FICCI and Yes Bank showed.&nbsp; According to the report, Delhi's adoption of EVs across a number of segments has led to an EV penetration rate of 11.5%. Kerala, where the use of electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) and three-wheelers (e3Ws) has been substantial, comes in second at 11.1%, followed by Assam at 10.0%. Furthermore, from FY21 to FY24, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Punjab had the highest compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in EV sales, highlighting the significance of states working together and exchanging effective tactics. More than half of the EV volumes in FY24 came from the top five states, according to the data, and the distribution of EV sales has improved over the previous four years. As India works to meet its net-zero targets, it underlined how important states are to the country's EV transition. The report urged a doubling of the current EV penetration rate to meet national targets by 2030. It called for states to renew their EV policies until 2030, emphasizing the need to mandate EV adoption in public transport and fleet operations. In comparison to the 256,400 Corolla and 214,700 RAV4 sold in the first quarter of this year, the Tesla Model Y sold 267,200 units internationally. Flipkart, an e-commerce firm has achieved a deployment of more than 10,000 EVs in its fleet as an initiative under its integration of electric vehicles (EVs) in last-mile delivery. As part of the Climate Group's EV100 project, the company announced that it will transition to a completely electric logistics last-mile fleet by 2030. At present, Flipkart’s 75 per cent electric fleet is situated in Tier-I cities, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai. Earlier in August, the company announced to achieved 55 per cent of its grocery delivery by EVs Furthermore, during this year's holiday season, it used its EV fleet to fulfil more than 16% of grocery deliveries to Tier-2+ cities including Lucknow, Sonipat, Ludhiana, Bhubaneswar, Malda, Hubli, and Vizag. The strategic inclusion of EVs in the company’s fleet has resulted in increased operational efficiency by lowering the cost per order and improving the speed of last-mile delivery by 20 per cent.&nbsp;&nbsp;"By combining our expanded EV fleet with critical investments in charging infrastructure, we are not only driving operational excellence, but also setting a standard for sustainable practices in the industry at large," said Hemant Badri, SVP, group head of Supply Chain, Customer Experience, and Re-commerce Business at Flipkart Group.

Ola Electric has registered a strong response to MapMyIndia’s allegation of “Ola Maps” being a copied version of their product, Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Bengaluru-based EV giant stated during a press briefing on the sidelines of the business's event Sankalp. Aggarwal called MapMyIndia’s allegations“opportunistic” and noted that the move came near to the business’s&nbsp;IPO "Empty vessels make more noise. In the run-up to our IPO, they made a lot of sound. They were totally opportunistic about it. We sent them a strong response; we wanted to deal with them after the IPO. In that timeline, we have sent them a response; they haven’t responded to that,” citing Aggarwal Indian Startup News reported. "They targeted Ola Electric, which isn't even in the mapping industry. What they have done is completely opportunistic and random. We will respond to them in the appropriate forum and time," he added. Last month, MapMyIndia's parent business, CE Info Systems, issued a legal notice to Ola Electric, accusing it of duplicating their data to create Ola Maps. The business claimed that the EV maker violated their license agreement, inked in 2022 when Ola Electric teamed with MapMyIndia to provide navigation services for the S1 Pro electric scooter. According to the agreement, Ola was banned from merging the licensed product with any other competitive product, engaging in reverse engineering, or attempting to extract or duplicate the source code from any API of the licensed product or associated software. MapMyIndia stated that Ola cached and preserved the data while also reverse engineering a licensed product. "You replicated our client's API (application programming interface) and SDKs (software development kits) from proprietary sources in order to create OLA Map,” according to a legal warning given by CE Info-Systems.&nbsp;The allegations further read, “You have blatantly copied/derived our client's private data in order to promote your unlawful motivation and unfair economic benefits. Your assertion that you have developed API and map data/Ola Maps solely through an open map is factually incorrect and not tenable."&nbsp; "We wish to clarify that explicitly t these charges are false, malicious, and misleading. Ola Electric maintains the integrity of its business processes. We will respond appropriately to the notice shortly," a business spokesperson of Ola Electric stated in a statement.

Exterior specifications The Klara S is equipped with a coil spring/damper hydraulic configuration in the back and a telescopic hydraulic setup up front. In the meanwhile, the front and back wheels of the vehicle are equipped with discs at both ends, measuring 14 inches each. The Klara S is designed to resemble a traditional scooter, much like the Bajaj Chetak, which debuted the Premium version of its 2024 model in January 2024. It has an accessible seat height of 760mm and circular LED turn indicators and headlamps.&nbsp; Furthermore, because the compact electric SUV's design patent has been filed, VinFast may introduce the VF3 in India in 2025. A memorandum of understanding was signed between a Tata Group subsidiary, Tata Agratas Energy Storage Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and the Gujarati government to establish a gigafactory for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries. The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the Tata Group's significant investments in the green and renewable energy industries. Tesla executives claimed at the time that the new method would enable the business to drastically reduce its factory footprint and slash production costs in half if it is put into use at its new plant in Mexico early the following year. Vayve Mobility, an Indian original equipment manufacturer (OEM), revealed a prototype claiming it to be the nation's first solar-powered <a href="https://evindia.online/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">electric vehicle</a> (EV).&nbsp; The company showcased the prototype at the ongoing Auto Expo 2023 on the outskirts of New Delhi. The program is held after a year-long delay due to Covid-19.&nbsp; Vilas Deshpande, chief operating officer at Vayve Mobility, has said that the company's upcoming product-"Eva" will be a two-seater smart car with solar panels on the roof. The solar charge accumulated through this will provide additional energy assistance on top of the battery. This technology has been claimed to give a range of an additional 10km range per day.&nbsp; Deshpande further said that users and enthusiasts could expect this vehicle in around 18 months.
