The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. The Union Finance Minister headed, the Goods and Services Tax Council has agreed to apply an 18% per cent tax on the margin value of used electric vehicles sold by companies, The Hindu Reported.&nbsp; Following the 55th GST Council meeting, Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the panel had decided to increase the tax rate from 12 per cent to 18 per cent on all used EV sales, similar to non-electric vehicle sales. The tax will only be applied to the value that represents margin, or the difference between the purchase price and selling price (or depreciated value if depreciation is claimed) by businesses. However, Individuals who purchase used vehicles will continue to be exempt from GST. Opposition leaders reacted sharply to the decision, with Samajwadi Party chairman Akhilesh Yadav and Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal accusing the Centre of serving the "rich" class. “Purchasing a car is a big deal for an ordinary middle-class family, but the central government is crushing their dreams by increasing taxes even on old cars. The BJP government at the centre is working only for the rich and industrialists. It is only providing inflation, taxes and pain to the common man and the poor of the country,” Citing Arvind Kejriwal's Tweet, The Hindu reported. GST on used car With the exception of petrol vehicles with an engine capacity of 1200 cc or more and a length of 4000 mm or more, diesel vehicles with an engine capacity of 1500 cc or more and a length of 4000 mm or more, and SUVs, which are subject to 18% GST, all old and used automobiles, including EVs, are now subject to 12% GST.

To counter the dominance of Chinese rivals and Tesla in the electric vehicle industry, Honda Motors and Nissan Motor have started talks about a merger by 2026.&nbsp; Nisan and Honda stated on Monday that they would consider joining hands with each other to create the third-largest auto group in the world in terms of vehicle sales. The merger is only outmatched by Toyota Motors of Japan and Volkswagen in Europe.&nbsp; Since 2021, when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the PSA Group merged to become Stellantis, which runs more than a dozen brands, the alliance between Japan's second and third-largest automakers would be the largest upheaval in the sector. “If realised, I believe that by uniting the strengths of both companies, we can deliver unparalleled value to customers worldwide who appreciate our respective brands,” citing a statement by Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida Quartz reported.&nbsp; He further said, “Together, we can create a unique way for them to enjoy cars that neither company could achieve alone,” the report added. The joint venture of Hinda and Nissan may also see a third partner– Mitsubishi Motor. However, the largest shareholding in the partnership will be with Nissan. Any further update of Mitsubishi joining the venture will be announced at the end of next month, according to a statement by the companies.&nbsp;&nbsp; Talks between Nissan and Honda are expected to conclude in June 2025, and a year later, a holding company will be established, and shares will be delisted. The majority of the board of directors for the prospective company will be chosen by Honda. The "rise of Chinese automakers and new players has changed the car industry quite a lot," Honda CEO stated, Toshiro Mibe, said at a news conference in Tokyo on Monday, the Quartz reported.&nbsp; He also added that the firms must improve their products by 2030, "otherwise we'll be beaten." Honda and Nissan started looking into this partnership in March. The firms stated at the time that they would be concentrating on working together on electric vehicles and related components to better compete with Chinese automakers and Tesla. They decided to cooperate in August and added Mitsubishi as a possible third partner. Last month, Nissan announced that it would cut 9,000 jobs and a fifth of its production capacity in reaction to poor sales in the U.S. and China. Along with a sales miss over the previous nine months, primarily due to the Chinese market, Honda reported a 15% drop in operating profit for its most recent quarter. Earlier this year, Honda and Nissan reduced their manufacturing in China, with the former reducing its alliances with regional partners as its once-largest market became increasingly competitive.

Addressing the expanding demand for EVs in the government sector, CSEL is planning to deploy 5,000 electric vehicles in the upcoming next two years. The program will offer government officers a variety of options of EV brands which they can choose as per their operating requirements.&nbsp; The update is another step towards India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 CESL has already made great progress, with around 2,000 electric vehicles in circulation throughout the nation and an estimated 17,000 electric buses planned. It is expected that the project would increase India's energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Shri Manohar Lal praised CESL's efforts, stating that the program is a perfect example of sustainable innovation and would expedite India's transition to greener transportation choices. The inaugural event exhibited a range of e-mobility options, including an incredible electric vehicle display and an EV parade including over 100 electric vehicles. The festive month of October has established a new record for electric vehicle (EV) sales by breaking the monthly EV registrations (covering all categories) record of 200,000 units recorded previously. The sales across all segments rose at the uptide of Diwali celebrations and other festivals. During the month, overall EV registrations reached an all-time high of 2.18 lakh units, the biggest monthly volume ever recorded. This underlines an increase from 1.6 lakh registrations in September 2024 to 1.4 lakh units in October 2023. The previous high was achieved in March of this year at 2.13 lakh units, owing to pre-buying activity ahead of revisions to the subsidy plan. As per Vahan statistics, the electric two-wheeler industry reached a new high in October selling 1.39 lakh units, surpassing the previous highest of 1.08 lakh units in July 2024. Ola Electric, which has been the market leader, sold around 42,000 units during October. The sales saw a huge surge from 24,700 units in September and 23,900 units in October 2023. Meanwhile, TVS Motor regained its second position in the electric two-wheeler market, selling above 30,000 units in October, from 18,218 units recorded last month. Moreover, Bajaj Auto stood in third place, selling some 28,190 units compared to 19,200 units last month and 9,070 units sold in the last year. The company has also rolled out a low-priced variant, Chetak 2903, to garner increased sales. Ather Energy's ₹4,500-crore IPO saw more than 16,000 registrations in October compared with 12,850 in September.

The total electric vehicle registrations in all categories combined stood at around 1.06 lakh units in August, down by 17%, over 1.28 lakh units in July, according to Vahan statistics. Sales of electric two-wheelers reduced significantly, with registrations dropping to 46,085 units in August, compared to 61,498 in July and 62,646 in August 2023. Electric three-wheelers outsold two-wheelers last month, at 54,861 units, but this was lower than the 59,151 units sold in July and 56,581 units sold in August 2023. Market leader Ola Electric's volume declined to 12,628 units in August from 18,602 in July in the electric two-wheeler sector. TVS Motor remained the second largest seller and sold 9,514 vehicles, down from 11,555 in July 2024. Sales for Bajaj Auto also dropped to 4,899 units in August vs 7,797 in July. While Ather Energy sold 4,278 units against 6,076 units, Hero MotoCorp despatched 4,742 units against 5,060, Greaves Cotton's sales declined to 2,816 units against 3,158 units. In the electric three-wheeler class, Mahindra Electric Mobility dominated the market with over 4,500 units sold in August, down from 6,504 in July. Bajaj Auto followed with 4,030 units, an increase from 3,694 in July. YC Electric Vehicle sold 3,545 units, a tiny decrease from 3,651 units, while Piaggio's sales fell to 1,558 from 1,959 units. TI Clean Mobility, the Murugappa Group's electric car business, sold around 598 units in August, a modest increase from 580 units in July. Electric car registrations fell to 4,755 units in August from 6,855 in July.
