The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. Dua has more than thirty years of experience in brand building, digital transformation, and strategic leadership in a variety of businesses.&nbsp; In his previous position as Group CEO of Dish TV, Dua was important in a number of important projects, such as the company's merger with Videocon D2H, the adoption of digital transformation, and the reduction of its debt from more than 3,000 crores to debt-free status in 2023. Under his leadership, Dish TV won accolades including the Economic Times' Best Brand Award and pioneered innovations like hybrid set-top boxes. In addition, Dua has held senior positions with Hero MotoCorp, Gillette, Unilever, and OTE Group in Oman. During his time at Hero MotoCorp, he helped the company rebrand from Hero Honda to Hero and promoted sales and turnover growth. Recently, Suzuki Motor Corporation revealed the eVitara, a worldwide model made in India for the globe, in Milan, Italy. "With decades of automotive expertise, we have combined advanced electric technology with a customer-first approach to delivering something truly transformative," Maruti Suzuki Citing Partho Banerjee, India Senior Executive Officer, Marketing &amp; Sales, PTI reported.&nbsp; He further noted that the firm has long held the view that to encourage EV adoption, it must establish a comprehensive ecosystem that makes the process of owning a battery electric vehicle easier for consumers. Banerjee further said, "A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. Nitin Gadkari, the union cabinet Minister of Road and Transport said on Thursday that the Indian electric vehicle industry has the ability to manufacture 10 times more than the current producing capacity of the market.&nbsp; While speaking at the 8th Catalyst Conference on Sustainability of the E-Vehicle Industry, also known as Ev expo 2024, Gadkari stated that the demand for EVs will only increase and now is the right moment for the business to thrive. Further, Gadkari mentions India’s capability to rise to the number 1 position in the automobile industry within the next five years. Currently, India is the third largest automobile industry of the world.

The auto component industry of India has overcome the fear and the initial scepticism to align with the EV transition, Vinnie Mehta, Director General of ACMA, said.&nbsp; Citing Mehta, Autocar professional, “Five to six years ago, there was a lot of apprehension, Nobody says anything anymore. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Automobile OEMs are no longer fearful of EV transition

With distribution agreements in Canada and Australia, Versinetic, a UK-based EV charger manufacturer has launched its LinkRay Distribution Partner Program. Under the program, distributors are provided with exclusive regional distribution rights, access to the company's EV charging technology, and training and technical assistance. LinkRay is a load-balancing controller of Verinetic which is specially manufactured for EV charging stations. Adjusting power delivery as per the required demand, the controller can distribute power among several charging points at the same time. According to the business, it saves charging times, ensures consistent performance across many EVs, and optimises electrical resources to lower installation and operating costs. Installers of AC and DC chargers in multi-unit buildings, including office spaces, apartment complexes and condominiums, can use it. To facilitate remote control and real-time monitoring of regions with numerous meters, switchboards, or transformers, Versinetic also intends to implement Link Aggregation, a new scalable feature that tiers multiple LinkRay devices. With Delhi leading the path of EV penetration, the adoption of electric vehicles in India is booming, a report by FICCI and Yes Bank showed.&nbsp; According to the report, Delhi's adoption of EVs across a number of segments has led to an EV penetration rate of 11.5%. Kerala, where the use of electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) and three-wheelers (e3Ws) has been substantial, comes in second at 11.1%, followed by Assam at 10.0%. Furthermore, from FY21 to FY24, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Punjab had the highest compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in EV sales, highlighting the significance of states working together and exchanging effective tactics. More than half of the EV volumes in FY24 came from the top five states, according to the data, and the distribution of EV sales has improved over the previous four years. As India works to meet its net-zero targets, it underlined how important states are to the country's EV transition. The report urged a doubling of the current EV penetration rate to meet national targets by 2030. It called for states to renew their EV policies until 2030, emphasizing the need to mandate EV adoption in public transport and fleet operations. EV penetration rate booming in India, Delhi takes lead: Report

Hyundai’s next big offering to the Indian auto industry is going to be the Creta EV, set to launch in January next year. The company is expected to launch the prices and specs of the vehicle at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo The EV will be based on Creta’s ICE counterpart which was launched in India earlier this year. Marking a cross-section of ICE and EV in design the vehicle will retain classic looks with some additional EV-specific elements like new aero wheels, a charging port up front and a fresh steering wheel. The 2025 Hyundai Creta EV is anticipated to feature a split headlight design, updated front and back bumpers, front and rear LED light bars, and a blanked-off grille as key design features. The model's interior will have technologies including wireless mobile charging, two 10.25-inch screens, an ADAS suite, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Although the company has not yet revealed the technical details of the upcoming Creta EV, the vehicle is expected to have a 50–60 kWh battery pack that could take the vehicle 500 km on a single full charge.&nbsp;

Moreover, Shah highlighted the role of FICCI in attempts to overcome infrastructure limitations to reach the desirable EV adoption target, the report added.&nbsp; According to the report, Shah stated, "We are working on a long-term plan to set up charging points strategically across the country. Tata Motors has released revised range numbers for its complete EV portfolio in response to the government's (MoRTH) addition of new parameters to the MIDC test cycles. Previously, these data were only based on a city (Urban) driving cycle, but the ministry now requires all carmakers to test and disclose range values that encompass both urban and extra-urban cycles. The MIDC range now includes a highway run, which increases the average testing speed from 19kmph to 31kmph and the maximum speed from 50kmph to 90kmph, resulting in a lower EV range claim. The total electric vehicle registrations in all categories combined stood at around 1.06 lakh units in August, down by 17%, over 1.28 lakh units in July, according to Vahan statistics. Sales of electric two-wheelers reduced significantly, with registrations dropping to 46,085 units in August, compared to 61,498 in July and 62,646 in August 2023. Electric three-wheelers outsold two-wheelers last month, at 54,861 units, but this was lower than the 59,151 units sold in July and 56,581 units sold in August 2023. Market leader Ola Electric's volume declined to 12,628 units in August from 18,602 in July in the electric two-wheeler sector. TVS Motor remained the second largest seller and sold 9,514 vehicles, down from 11,555 in July 2024. Sales for Bajaj Auto also dropped to 4,899 units in August vs 7,797 in July. While Ather Energy sold 4,278 units against 6,076 units, Hero MotoCorp despatched 4,742 units against 5,060, Greaves Cotton's sales declined to 2,816 units against 3,158 units. In the electric three-wheeler class, Mahindra Electric Mobility dominated the market with over 4,500 units sold in August, down from 6,504 in July. Bajaj Auto followed with 4,030 units, an increase from 3,694 in July. YC Electric Vehicle sold 3,545 units, a tiny decrease from 3,651 units, while Piaggio's sales fell to 1,558 from 1,959 units. TI Clean Mobility, the Murugappa Group's electric car business, sold around 598 units in August, a modest increase from 580 units in July. Electric car registrations fell to 4,755 units in August from 6,855 in July.

During the Ola Electric Sankalp 2024 event, Aggarwal announced the company's strategy to transform the Indian energy landscape. The strategy, scheduled to proceed in a phased manner, aims to produce 5 GWH cells in 2024, scale up to 20 GWh by 2026, and reach 100 GWh by 2030. Additionally, he declared that by April 2025, Ola Electric will begin incorporating the 4680 cells into its products. Under the PLI scheme, out of the 50Gwh, the Ola Electric was given 20 Gigawatt hours. Meanwhile, other beneficiaries of the scheme include Reliance New Energy Battery Storage and ACC Energy Storage. The company has also informed the Ministry of Heavy Industries that it has already completed the pilot manufacturing of around 10,000 cells, citing sources told Business Standard.&nbsp; Moreover, the purpose of the ACC PLI scheme was to make the country's EV industry self-reliant in battery technologies. Industry estimates peg about 30-50% of the total cost of an electric two-wheeler contributed by its battery alone, depending on its capacity and chemistry. Compared to the 2170 cells in use by Ola in its scooters today, this "Bharat" cell is reported to have five times better energy density to improve the vehicle’s performance. Further, the company also claimed faster charging times with its latest technology which would improve consumer convenience. The gigafactory of the company is being built in phases in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, with Phase 1 aiming for a 5GwH capacity.

According to a report by The Hindu BusinessLine, the Tata Group is strategically pushing to monetarily maximise its investments in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market with its public debut, which aims to earn $1–2 billion. A banker with knowledge of the situation told The Hindu BusinessLine, "The listing of TPEML is to ensure that the Tata Group is able to monetise its investments in the electric vehicles business rather than to garner funds from the market."&nbsp; Although the exact date of the IPO is yet unknown, the business is reportedly looking at FY25 or FY26 as a possible window, assuming excellent market circumstances for electric cars and a generally upbeat outlook for the stock market. Notably, Tata Motors has already committed to allocating $1 billion of its own funds to TPEML, and the strategy is moving along according to plan. As part of its big $2 billion investment plan for the EV sector by 2026, TPEML successfully secured $1 billion in finance from TPG in January 2023. This announcement follows, according to numerous media reports.
