India’s First AIS-038 Certified Swappable Battery Platform for Trucks & Buses Launched by SUN Mobility
In a landmark move for India’s heavy electric vehicle (HEV) sector, SUN Mobility has announced receiving the industry’s first AIS-038 certification for its indigenously developed high voltage modular swappable battery platform.
The certification, awarded by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), marks a critical shift in how India plans to decarbonize its commercial transport fleet. By focusing on heavy duty trucks and buses, SUN Mobility is addressing the "hard to abate" sectors that contribute significantly to vehicular emissions.
Breaking the Barriers to Heavy EV Adoption
Electrifying heavy commercial vehicles has traditionally been hampered by three major issues: high upfront costs, long charging durations, and range anxiety. SUN Mobility’s new platform aims to eliminate these hurdles through a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model.
The certified platform operates in the 660V high voltage category and is available in 50 kWh and 100 kWh variants. Because the architecture is OEM-agnostic, it can be integrated into brand new electric trucks or used to retrofit existing diesel fleets, providing massive flexibility for operators.
Efficiency and Fleet Economics
"Induction of swap enabled Heavy Electric Vehicles will be imperative to bring EV adoption from the margins to mainstream," said Ashok Agarwal, CEO of SUN Mobility HEV Business.
With the Indian government’s PM e-DRIVE scheme gaining momentum, this AIS-038 certified solution provides a verified, scalable path for state transport undertakings and private fleet owners to transition to green energy without the traditional downtime associated with plug in charging.
