Indian Auto Sales Hit Record High in February 2026: SUV Demand Drives 10.6% Growth
The Indian automotive industry has hit a historic milestone, with February 2026 recorded as the best ever February for vehicle sales. According to the latest data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the industry saw a massive surge across multiple segments, led primarily by the increasing consumer appetite for Utility Vehicles (UVs).
Record-Breaking Passenger Vehicle Sales
Passenger vehicle (PV) sales reached an all time February high of 4.18 lakh units, marking a 10.6% year on year growth. This momentum was heavily supported by the Utility Vehicle segment, which saw a jump of 13.5%, totaling 2,36,957 units compared to 2,08,795 units in the same month last year.
The shift in consumer preference toward SUVs and Crossovers continues to be the primary engine for the PV industry's growth, overshadowing the entry level hatchback segment.
Segment-Wise Performance Highlights
The overall industry performance remained robust, with total sales across all categories hitting approximately 2.3 million units, a 30% increase.
-
Two-Wheelers: Witnessed strong recovery and growth, contributing significantly to the 2.3 million unit total.
-
Three-Wheelers: Maintained steady momentum as urban and semi urban last mile connectivity demand remains high.
-
Utility Vehicles: Remained the standout performer, accounting for over 50% of the total passenger vehicle volumes.
Industry Outlook
Experts suggest that the record breaking numbers in February 2026 are a result of improved supply chain efficiencies and a strong festive carry over demand. With the end of the financial year approaching in March, manufacturers are expected to maintain this aggressive pace through various year end offers and new model launches.
