Following the government’s appeal to citizens to reduce fuel consumption, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy will now include a larger number of electric vehicles. The move is part of a broader set of austerity measures, which also includes a 50% reduction in the total number of vehicles in the Prime Minister’s carcade.

The Special Protection Group (SPG), the agency responsible for the Prime Minister’s security, has been directed to incorporate as many electric vehicles as possible into the convoy without making any fresh purchases. The directions to SPG also specified that the changes should not compromise the mandatory safety inscribed in the “Blue Book”.

In addition, the states run by the Bharatiya Janata Party are now mirroring the austerity campaign. Other ministers have made the decision to cut back on the number of vehicles in their official convoys, including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The update is a part of a bigger initiative to promote administrative austerity measures by responsible fuel usage, conserving national resources, and reducing avoidable travel. Prime Minister Modi on Sunday urged cooperation to assist the nation withstand supply chain disruptions, inflationary pressures, and global economic uncertainty amid rising crude oil prices and an energy crisis brought on by the US-Iran war.

"How can the nation progress if we depend on imports for everything?" PM Modi asked, urging people to embrace "nationally responsible" lifestyle choices and encourage the use of domestic goods.

To help reduce the strain on foreign exchange outflows, the prime minister urged the populace to refrain from making unnecessary gold purchases for a year and cautioned against traveling abroad.

He also urged people to refrain from traveling abroad for holidays and destination weddings, claiming that saving foreign exchange reserves is a patriotic gesture. Additionally, he advocated for domestic travel and festivities.
