The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. Under his leadership, Dish TV won accolades including the Economic Times' Best Brand Award and pioneered innovations like hybrid set-top boxes. In addition, Dua has held senior positions with Hero MotoCorp, Gillette, Unilever, and OTE Group in Oman. Recently, Suzuki Motor Corporation revealed the eVitara, a worldwide model made in India for the globe, in Milan, Italy. "With decades of automotive expertise, we have combined advanced electric technology with a customer-first approach to delivering something truly transformative," Maruti Suzuki Citing Partho Banerjee, India Senior Executive Officer, Marketing &amp; Sales, PTI reported.&nbsp; He further noted that the firm has long held the view that to encourage EV adoption, it must establish a comprehensive ecosystem that makes the process of owning a battery electric vehicle easier for consumers. Banerjee further said, "A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. To tackle this issue, we are committed to introducing a reliable and comprehensive EV ecosystem alongside the eVitara," PTI reported.&nbsp; According to him, this would include both home charging options and a statewide network of fast chargers that are accessible at Maruti Suzuki dealerships and service locations.

Currently, India is the third largest automobile industry of the world.

The auto component industry of India has overcome the fear and the initial scepticism to align with the EV transition, Vinnie Mehta, Director General of ACMA, said.&nbsp; Citing Mehta, Autocar professional, “Five to six years ago, there was a lot of apprehension, Nobody says anything anymore. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Automobile OEMs are no longer fearful of EV transition

With distribution agreements in Canada and Australia, Versinetic, a UK-based EV charger manufacturer has launched its LinkRay Distribution Partner Program. With Delhi leading the path of EV penetration, the adoption of electric vehicles in India is booming, a report by FICCI and Yes Bank showed.&nbsp; According to the report, Delhi's adoption of EVs across a number of segments has led to an EV penetration rate of 11.5%. Kerala, where the use of electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) and three-wheelers (e3Ws) has been substantial, comes in second at 11.1%, followed by Assam at 10.0%. Furthermore, from FY21 to FY24, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Punjab had the highest compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in EV sales, highlighting the significance of states working together and exchanging effective tactics. More than half of the EV volumes in FY24 came from the top five states, according to the data, and the distribution of EV sales has improved over the previous four years. As India works to meet its net-zero targets, it underlined how important states are to the country's EV transition. The report urged a doubling of the current EV penetration rate to meet national targets by 2030. It called for states to renew their EV policies until 2030, emphasizing the need to mandate EV adoption in public transport and fleet operations. Gotion High-tech placed fourth in September, with 3.16 GWh of installed capacity and a 5.8 per cent market share. Gotion's share climbed by 1.21 percentage points in September, up from 4.58 per cent in August, the highest gain among the top 15. In September, China's lithium ternary battery installed capacity was 13.1 GWh, accounting for 24.1% of the total, an increase of 7.4% year on year and 8.2% from August. The installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries was 41.3 GWh, accounting for 75.8 per cent of the total, an increase of 70.9 per cent year on year and 18 per cent from August. In September, CATL, CALB, and LG Energy Solution had the most installed capacity of ternary batteries, accounting for 73.15 per cent, 9.27 per cent, and 6.79 per cent, respectively. CATL, BYD, and CALB dominated the LFP battery market in terms of installed capacity in September, with 34.8 per cent, 31.8 per cent, and 6.91 per cent, respectively.

Any revisions in the government of India’s new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy seem unlikely as global automakers like Tesla have shown a lack of interest in the growing Indian EV market, Moneycontrol reported.&nbsp;&nbsp; According to an official from the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), the qualifying requirement and other restrictions would stay the same for carmakers looking to take advantage of the current EV program. "Our stance is clear. You can import cars with reduced duties if you make new investments (of $500 million) in an EV manufacturing plant in India," stated the official. In March, the government introduced the scheme in an effort to draw in significant global companies like Tesla. The new policy permitted companies to import a restricted number of automobiles at a 15% tariff on vehicles costing $35,000 or more for five years beginning with the day the clearance letter was issued. Under the proposal, qualified applicants must establish manufacturing facilities in India with a minimum expenditure of $500 million for the production of e-4W (electric four-wheelers) and offer a bank guarantee. "We are not worried that Tesla or any other vehicle has not filed for this policy. "We will not change the EV policy to benefit any particular company," the spokesman stated. However, he added that the government is in negotiations with automakers to make the policy more industry-friendly. The policy requires that the manufacturing facilities be operational within three years after the MHI's issuance of the clearance letter, with an initial DVA (domestic value addition) of 25%. Later, the DVA must be increased to 50% within five years. Companies will be able to import fully built-up unit (CBU) e-4W cars made by them for a 15% customs charge, subject to specific restrictions. The maximum number of e-4W units that can be imported at the lower tariff rate will be 8,000 per year. The program also allows for the rollover of unused yearly import quotas. According to certain media sources, the government intends to amend its EV policy in order to provide incentives to manufacturers that have invested in the nation. According to the reports, the government may consider providing incentives to carmakers that have established production units for internal combustion electric vehicles (ICEVs), hybrids, and EVs.

Mishra stated that the business has already received orders for around 12,000 units of the model, which has a range of 160 miles on a single charge. "The Mahindra ZEO is a perfect testament to our ethos of reimagining the last-mile ecosystem with innovative technologies, reliable products and integrated solutions," according to Mishra. The vehicle is reported to be manufactured in the company’s facility in Chakan, Pune, Maharashtra. The BGauss RUV350 has an ex-showroom pricing of Rs 1.10 lakh. BGauss at present has over 120 dealerships around the country. The BGauss RUV350 is powered by a high-capacity lithium-ion battery with an ARAI-approved range of up to 145km on a single charge, which is paired with an in-wheel hyperdrive electric motor. The top speed is stated to be 75kmph. The electric two-wheeler is made of metal and runs on bigger 16-inch alloy wheels. Aside from the helmet, there is space for a charger and other items. The BGauss RUV350 has a digital TFT cluster equipped with remote diagnostics, Bluetooth connectivity and integrated navigation. The digital display shows real-time information including phone alerts and turn-by-turn navigation, as well as functions like reverse mode, cruise control, hill hold, fall detection, vacation mode, and side and main stand sensors. In addition, the display provides live vehicle tracking, 'God mode' (vehicle immobilisation), geofencing, a dual theme, document storage, a photometric adaptive display for day and night modes, speed, battery condition, and range. Ather is reported to launch its first experience facility in Sri Lanka in the coming quarter in collaboration with Evolution Auto Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture between Sensei Capital Partners, Atman Group, and Sino Lanka Private Limited. Evolution Auto Pvt Ltd will take charge of Ather Energy’s distribution throughout Sri Lanka. The company will handle all sales and servicing operations in the region. Furthermore, Ather has plans of establishing several fast-charging infrastructures throughout the country which will fasten the transition to electric vehicles while making it easier for consumers who are changing from gasoline or diesel-powered cars. While addressing the press, Ravneet Singh Phokela – Chief Business Officer for Ather Energy said, “We are happy to enter into this new market”. He emphasized that the update is an extension of their overseas market after Nepal where the company had earlier inaugurated as their first stride in the global EV market. He said, “The costs associated with running fuel vehicles are becoming higher levels and demand for electric vehicles (EVs) keep growing in light of their economic advantage and environmental considerations”. Ather inaugurated its first Experience Centre (EC) last year in Nepal and has since expanded to three Experience Centres and seven fast-charging grids around the nation. As of March 31st, 2024, Ather had a retail sales network in India that included 208 Experience Centres and 1973 fast-charging stations under the Ather Grid.
