MATTER Hits 100 Granted Patents: A New Milestone for India’s EV Innovation
In a move that solidifies its position as a deep tech leader in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, Ahmedabad based startup MATTER has officially crossed the milestone of 100 granted patents. With over 400 filings to its name, the company is setting a new benchmark for indigenous technology in India’s rapidly evolving two wheeler market.
Since its inception in 2019, MATTER has focused on a "full-stack" approach, moving away from the common "assemble-only" model. The company’s patent portfolio covers critical areas of electric motorcycling, including thermal management systems, liquid cooled drivetrains, and its signature four speed hyper shift gearbox.
Redefining the Indian Electric Motorcycle
The announcement comes as MATTER’s flagship bike, the AERA, proves its mettle on Indian roads. Unlike many competitors, MATTER’s innovation isn’t just on paper; it is delivering tangible performance for thousands of riders.
According to data released by the company, AERA riders logged over 21 lakh kilometers in 2025 alone. The technology has been tested in India’s harshest climates, performing seamlessly in temperatures ranging from a freezing 3°C to a blistering 48°C.
Key Performance Highlights of the MATTER AERA:
-
Top Speed: 124 km/h.
-
Acceleration: 0–60 km/h in just 4.2 seconds.
-
Efficiency: Real world range of up to 182 km, with hypermiling tests reaching 226 km.
-
Cost Savings: Owners are reporting annual savings of up to ₹65,000 compared to traditional petrol bikes.
Beyond Assembly: The Shift to Deep-Tech
The high "conversion ratio" from patent filings to grants indicates the technical depth of MATTER’s engineering team. Mr. Mohal Lalbhai, CEO of MATTER, stated that this achievement proves India can lead in original EV innovation rather than just adapting global platforms.
“We are building technology that redefines how electric motorcycles perform and deliver value,” Lalbhai said. The company’s CTO, Mr. Kumar Prasad Telikapalli, added that their focus is now shifting toward AI-Defined Vehicle (AIDV) control, which will power the next generation of smart mobility.
Industry Recognition
MATTER’s commitment to intellectual property (IP) has already gained national attention. The company was recently awarded the ‘Best Patents Portfolio’ in the startup category by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
As the Indian EV market shifts from early adoption to mass market scale, MATTER’s growing IP library signals a broader trend: the rise of "Innovate in India" products that can compete on a global stage.
