Target 2030: Maharashtra Aims for 30% Electric Vehicle Registrations to Power Future Mobility Hub
Maharashtra has set a target to achieve a 30% electric vehicle (EV) share in all new vehicle registrations by 2030. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during the launch of the locally assembled Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric SUV at the automaker's Chakan plant near Pune.
The move signals a strategic shift from traditional automotive manufacturing to advanced mobility technology, sustainable transportation corridors, and green innovation across the state.
Key Highlights of Maharashtra's EV Strategy
- 30% EV Adoption by 2030: Under its updated Electric Vehicle Policy, Maharashtra is targeting 30 out of every 100 new registered vehicles to be zero-emission electric models by the end of the decade.
- Highway Charging Networks: The state government is expanding fast-charging networks and establishing dedicated green mobility corridors along key expressways, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg.
- Innovate in Maharashtra: Shifting momentum from 'Make in Maharashtra' to 'Innovate in Maharashtra,' the policy emphasizes battery technology, localized R&D, and circular battery recycling ecosystems.
- Automotive Tech Hub: Emphasizing that future vehicles will operate as integrated mobility platforms combining AI, edge computing, and clean energy, Maharashtra is positioning Pune and surrounding belts as global innovation hubs for EV software and hardware.
Local Manufacturing Boost: Mercedes-Benz Expansion in Chakan
The announcement coincided with the official rollout of the luxury electric SUV Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric, produced locally in Chakan.
- Investments & Employment: Mercedes-Benz has invested around ₹3,200 crore in its Maharashtra footprint. The Chakan plant employs nearly 1,200 direct workers and supports over 18,000 indirect jobs across suppliers and service networks.
- Demand Dynamics: The luxury EV model garnered strong consumer interest, securing roughly 650 prospective customer inquiries within 36 hours of its official announcement.
Industry Impact & Outlook
As India's automotive heartland, Maharashtra's policypush provides strong regulatory clarity for legacy OEMs, EV startups, charging point operators (CPOs), and battery manufacturers. By combining manufacturing incentives with aggressive infrastructure development along major transport corridors, the state aims to drive clean transit adoption while solidifying its position as a global leader in future-ready mobility solutions.
