Hero MotoCorp to Launch First Vida Electric Motorcycle in 2027
Hero MotoCorp is set to make a significant leap in its electric mobility journey. The company has officially confirmed that its first electric motorcycle is expected to hit the market in 2027. This launch will expand Hero's EV portfolio under the Vida brand, moving the two-wheeler giant beyond its current scooter offerings and into the growing electric motorcycle segment.
Two Ground-Up Platforms: UBEX and VXZ
Rather than adapting existing scooter architectures, Hero MotoCorp is developing two entirely new, dedicated platforms for its upcoming electric motorcycles. First showcased as concepts at the EICMA 2025 exhibition, these platforms codenamed UBEX and VXZ are now progressing steadily toward production, as evidenced by recent design patents filed in India.
Project UBEX
-
Design & Styling: UBEX is positioned as a sporty electric streetfighter. It features an aggressive front design with a mono projector headlight, top-mounted LED DRLs, and a sculpted fuel tank.
-
Hardware: The motorcycle incorporates telescopic front forks, alloy wheels, a single-piece seat, and petal disc brakes at both ends.
-
Target Audience: Designed as a modular urban motorcycle, UBEX is intended for everyday commuting and could potentially become the more mainstream, volume-oriented offering.
Project VXZ
-
Strategic Collaboration: The VXZ platform is being developed in collaboration with US-based Zero Motorcycles. It is aimed at delivering higher performance in the premium electric motorcycle category.
-
Premium Features: Patent images indicate that the VXZ will feature premium hardware, including USD front forks, a rear monoshock, a belt-drive system, and split seats.
-
Styling: Blending streetfighter aesthetics with semi-faired bodywork, the VXZ is expected to cater to adventure-oriented buyers and riders seeking a performance-focused EV.
A Purpose-Built Motorcycle Architecture
While Hero plans to carry forward valuable learnings from its Vida electric scooter program, both the UBEX and VXZ platforms are engineered specifically around the unique demands of a motorcycle. Kausalya Nandakumar, Chief Business Officer of Hero MotoCorp's Emerging Mobility Business Unit, confirmed that the new architectures will cater directly to consumer needs in critical areas. These engineering focus areas include:
-
Overall performance and rideability.
-
Gradeability and real-world range.
-
Motorcycle-specific ergonomics.
Hero MotoCorp has not yet revealed final technical specifications such as exact battery capacities, motor outputs, or charging times. However, patent filings suggest both motorcycles will feature large, centrally mounted battery packs and advanced connectivity features.
Market Impact
With 2027 marked as the pivotal year for Hero's entry into the electric motorcycle space, the company aims to capitalize on an early mover advantage in a segment with relatively few established players. As Hero scales its overall EV production capacity, industry watchers and enthusiasts can expect more technical details to be revealed in the coming months.
