The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market continues its high-voltage growth in 2026, with mid-February retail data revealing a tightening race among top manufacturers. While Tata Motors remains the undisputed king of the segment, the real story is the meteoric rise of Vietnamese newcomer VinFast, which has successfully overtaken legacy giant Hyundai for the second month in a row.

Tata and MG Maintain the Lead
Tata Motors continues to hold a massive lead with 2,410 units sold in the first half of February. The company's diverse portfolio—led by the newly refreshed Harrier EV and the evergreen Punch.ev—ensures it captures nearly half of the total market share.
MG Motor follows in second place with 1,560 units. Their "Battery-as-a-Service" (BaaS) model has been a game-changer for budget-conscious buyers, keeping models like the Windsor EV and Comet high on the charts.
The VinFast Factor: A New Number 4
The most significant shift in the February data is VinFast securing the 4th position with 181 units. Since its launch in late 2025, VinFast has moved aggressively with its locally assembled VF 6 and VF 7 SUVs.
By beating Hyundai (138 units), VinFast has proven that Indian EV buyers are increasingly brand-agnostic, prioritizing purpose-built EV platforms and tech over legacy brand names. Hyundai’s reliance on the Ioniq 5 and Creta EV has seen slower traction compared to the fresh, tech-heavy offerings from the Vietnamese disruptor.
Mahindra’s "Born Electric" Surge
Mahindra holds firmly to the third spot with 1,142 units. The brand is reaping the rewards of its "Born Electric" strategy, with the BE 6 and XEV 9e seeing high demand in urban markets. Mahindra’s growth rate remains one of the highest in the industry as it converts its traditional SUV fanbase to electric.
