According to him, high tariffs will boost manufacturing in the US which will rebalance trade with other countries, and improve government finances. The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Automobile OEMs are no longer fearful of EV transition

With Delhi leading the path of EV penetration, the adoption of electric vehicles in India is booming, a report by FICCI and Yes Bank showed.&nbsp; According to the report, Delhi's adoption of EVs across a number of segments has led to an EV penetration rate of 11.5%. Kerala, where the use of electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) and three-wheelers (e3Ws) has been substantial, comes in second at 11.1%, followed by Assam at 10.0%. Furthermore, from FY21 to FY24, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Punjab had the highest compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in EV sales, highlighting the significance of states working together and exchanging effective tactics. More than half of the EV volumes in FY24 came from the top five states, according to the data, and the distribution of EV sales has improved over the previous four years. As India works to meet its net-zero targets, it underlined how important states are to the country's EV transition. The report urged a doubling of the current EV penetration rate to meet national targets by 2030. It called for states to renew their EV policies until 2030, emphasizing the need to mandate EV adoption in public transport and fleet operations. The model's interior will have technologies including wireless mobile charging, two 10.25-inch screens, an ADAS suite, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. In Indonesia, it is known as the M6, and sources claim BYD would adopt the same branding for the modified MPV in India. Aside from outward aesthetic upgrades, the e6 will have additional features inside. The e6's front end gets new full-LED headlights with a reworked LED daytime running lamp signature, and the two units are joined by a new satin trim with the BYD logo. It also receives a revised front bumper with curved air vents closer to the corners and new chrome components. At the back, the e6 facelift reveals a new pair of wraparound taillights that are considerably bigger than previously with additional LED detailing. The rear bumper has also been observed to be somewhat modified, with new chrome inserts, similar to the front one. Although nothing much has changed in the profile, the e6 is expected to get new alloy wheels. The most significant change inside the vehicle is the bigger floating touchscreen which now comes in a 12.8-inch screen, up from 10.1 inches in the previous model. Otherwise, the dashboard stays mostly unchanged. The central console has been somewhat updated, with two wireless charging pads, some new switchgear, and a new drive selector lever. It also receives a new steering wheel but keeps the analogue dials for the instrument cluster. Internationally, the e6 is available in either 6- or 7-seater variants, but it is unclear which will be sold here. Currently, the India-spec e6 is just five-seater. Other notable features include automated climate control, 360-degree cameras, cruise control, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a motorised tailboard. In Indonesia, the e6 comes with two battery pack options including a 55.4kWh unit with a stated range of 420 km and a 71.8kWh one with a range of 530 km. It generates 163 horsepower with the smaller battery and 204 horsepower with the bigger battery and the torque in both the vehicle is 310 Nm. That is a big increase over the old car's 95hp and 180Nm outputs. BYD currently provides the 71.8kWh battery for the e6 in India, so this is likely to continue unaltered. Take notice that the advertised range with this bigger battery has increased by 8km. It's unclear whether the smaller battery pack will be available in India.

According to SK On chief spokesperson Ko Chang-Kook, several automakers are in talks with SK On, a division of energy group SK Innovation, which provides electric vehicle batteries to Volkswagen, Ford Motor and Hyundai Motor among others. "We are in discussions with automakers who plan to use our prismatic batteries, which means we will soon have the chance to expand the range of products we provide." citing Ko Reuters reported Although Ko would not name the automakers, he did say that the business has completed the development of technology for prismatic batteries and is ready to begin producing it as soon as negotiations are concluded. Currently, three different types of lithium-ion batteries are utilised in electric vehicles (EVs): prismatic, cylindrical, and pouch-type. While they all function essentially the same way, each type has advantages and disadvantages. Batteries, both cylindrical and prismatic, are housed in sturdy cases. However, the pouch kind of battery employs sealed flexible foils. Only pouch-type batteries for EVs are currently produced by SK On. Despite having obtained prismatic battery technology, the company is also aiming to create cylindrical batteries, which are well-known for being the kind that Tesla uses.&nbsp;&nbsp; When asked whether the company is planning to cut capital expenditure due to continuous losses,&nbsp; Ko responded that SK On is not currently considering cutting its capital expenditure for the year, adding that it will not cut research and development spending.&nbsp; The parent company of SK On, SK Innovation, announced earlier this year that it has earmarked almost 80% of its annual capital spending budget of over 9 trillion won ($6.55 billion) for SK On. As EV demand declines, crosstown competitor LG Energy Solution (LGES) said in April that it intends to reduce capital spending this year. In order to improve its operations, LGES suspended a portion of the building of its multibillion-dollar battery factory in the U.S. state of Arizona last month. The company plans to execute planned investments at a flexible pace. SK On stated in April that it remained on course to achieve break-even in the second part of this year.
