According to him, high tariffs will boost manufacturing in the US which will rebalance trade with other countries, and improve government finances. The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. A recent study projects that 15.1 million electric vehicles will be sold worldwide in the upcoming year, accounting for 16.7% of all new automobile sales worldwide. According to the report, sales of BEVs are expected to reach 11.6 million units in 2024, with a nearly 30% annual rise predicted in 2025. According to the S&amp;P Global Mobility research, government policies, tariffs, incentives, and charging infrastructure will all have an impact on growth, which will differ by region. Focusing on specific regions, the data projected that despite a 117% year-over-year increase, the survey found that EVs will only make up 7.5% of all automobile sales in India.&nbsp; The research further showed that EVs will increase by 36% in the US, but their market share will only be 11.2%. However, ten years ahead of schedule, EVs are predicted to surpass ICE-powered vehicles in China for the first time. In central and western Europe, BEVs are anticipated to hold a 20.4% market share and boost their sales by 43.4% annually.

Ather Energy, India’s premium two-electric vehicle manufacturing company, on Dec.30, secured the final approval from the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to release its Initial Public Offering The company's Draft Red Herring Prospectus indicates that the total IPO size may be approximately Rs 4,500 crore, however, the firm has not yet filed its RHP paperwork. Following its rival Ola Electric Mobility's August debut, Ather Energy will be the second business to list on the bourses if the IPO is launched. Ather submitted draft documents on 9 September in an effort to raise money for debt reduction and the construction of an E2W (electric two-wheeler) factory in Maharashtra. In the initial public offering (IPO), promoters and investors will offer 2.2 crore equity shares for sale in addition to a new issue of equity shares valued at Rs 3,100 crore. According to a report by Moneyvcontrol, Ather is trying to achieve a valuation of approximately $2.5 billion. Since its most recent funding, the valuation has doubled. Ather Energy became a unicorn business in August 2024 after securing $71 million in a fresh investment round led by its current partner, the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF). Following the last investment, the company's valuation reached $1.3 billion.

PURE EV, one of India’s leading electric two-wheeler makers has recorded significant cost reductions by achieving energy efficiency at its facility in Telangana.&nbsp; In its statement, the company claimed to have achieved notable operating cost reductions by combining a 500 KWh Energy Storage Solution (ESS) and a 125 KW solar power system with its diesel generator (DG) and grid electricity. In comparison to the prior fiscal year, this strategy led to a 60% decrease in electricity prices and a 65% reduction in DG fuel costs in FY 2024. Further increasing operational efficiency was the 50% reduction in peak load KVA charges. PURE EV intends to develop its infrastructure for renewable energy as part of its long-term sustainability strategy. The company plans to install an additional 500 KWh ESS and 125 KW of solar power capacity by FY 2026. Its goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions at its headquarters and manufacturing sites will be expedited by this development. In its statement, the company claimed to have achieved notable operating cost reductions by combining a 500 KWh Energy Storage Solution (ESS) and a 125 KW solar power system with its diesel generator (DG) and grid electricity. Decreasing its funding from Rs 725Cr to Rs 650 Cr, the UK government’s&nbsp; British International Investment Plc (BII) and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Ltd have revised the terms of their financial tranche for the investment in the Indian automaker’s electric vehicle unit Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd (MEAL). The investment is reported to be completed by March 31. With this, BII will now have invested a total of Rs 1,850 crore in MEAL in two tranches, and it will own a share in MEAL that ranges from 2.6-4.6%. Previously, a total of approximately Rs 1,925 crore was projected to be invested in MEAL. M&amp;M stated that MEAL's overall business plan will not be impacted by the funding shift. The goal of BII's investment is to greatly speed up the availability and uptake of electric vehicles in India and other areas that M&amp;M serves. The money is mostly being used to develop and promote a portfolio of cutting-edge electric SUVs that are of the highest calibre. In the first tranche, BII invested Rs 1,200 crore in MEAL. In addition to BII, Mahindra's electric vehicle division is also owned by Temasek, an investment firm based in Singapore. Temasek declared in 2023 that it will invest Rs 1,200 crore in MEAL for a 1.5–3% share in the business. The BE 6 and XEV 9e, M&amp;M's first lineup of Born Electric SUVs, were introduced in November. They start at Rs 18.9 lakh and Rs 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. Deliveries to the two models, which are based on the INGLO (Intelligent Electric Global) architecture, are anticipated to begin in late February or early March. The Born Electric portfolio is an element of M&amp;M's overall plan to become a major force in the EV industry. By 2027, the business had previously stated that it expected EV penetration to reach 20–30%. A Rs 12,000 crore investment in M&amp;M's electric company MEAL over the following three years was also approved by the board at the beginning of this fiscal year.&nbsp;

M&M, BII decreases final investment tranche in Indian arm of Mahindra Electric 

Releasing draft guidelines on setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) aims to establish more than 22,000 EV chargers for electric four-wheelers, 1,800 chargers for e-buses and much more, according to a report by the Hindu Businessline.&nbsp; The step taken under the Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme, has been shared with various stakeholders to register their inputs/ comments, citing ministry officials, the report added. Moreover, the scheme calls for the installation of charging infrastructure for electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), among other light EVs.&nbsp;&nbsp; The government seeks to promote participation among all of the stakeholders including charge point operators, EV charger manufacturers, state governments, urban local bodies (ULBs), government agencies, central-level ministries, discoms, highway authorities, and other central public sector enterprises (CPSEs). The PM E-DRIVE initiative aims to provide up to 80% subsidy on upstream infrastructure (behind-the-meter infrastructure) with an investment of ₹2,000 crores for the installation of public fast charging stations. It said that in extraordinary circumstances, the Ministry might take into account additional funding up to 100% of the project's cost, including upstream power infrastructure. As per the guidelines, MoPNG, MoRTH, the Ministry of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Ports, and Shipping and Waterways are among the central-level Ministries that will also be required to submit proposals. “State governments and Central Ministries are also encouraged to carry out feasibility studies to identify suitable locations for EV PCS. These site assessments will help identify potential locations based on traffic patterns, proximity to major commercial spaces, land accessibility, sufficient power supply, and potential for grid upgrades to support the additional load,” citing MHI released draft guidelines, the Hindu businessline reported. Based on the data requested in Section 10.3, a technical committee led by an Additional/Joint Secretary, MHI, and comprising representatives from Niti Aayog, the Ministry of Power, and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), will shortlist the suggestions. Following finalisation and communication, MHI will release the incentive in three instalments: 30% of the total amount following the tender's issuance as a mobilisation advance, 40% following the deployment of EVSEs in accordance with the bid documents, and the remaining 30% following the charging stations' successful commercial operation. The MHI said, “This amount will be exclusively used for reimbursement of the upstream infrastructure cost based on the type of charging station. The applicable incentive amount will be released to the ‘tender inviting authority’. However, the Upstream Infrastructure (assets up to the meter) will belong to the relevant Discom in all circumstances,” the Hindu Businessline reported.

The PM E-DRIVE initiative aims to provide up to 80% subsidy on upstream infrastructure (behind-the-meter infrastructure) with an investment of ₹2,000 crores for the installation of public fast charging stations.

Delhi used 113.4 million units or more than 55% of this usage. The largest energy usage at EV stations was observed in BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) areas, hitting 47.1 million units. EV charging stations in the service regions of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) saw usage of 40 million units and 26 million units, respectively.&nbsp; Many parts of the city are getting the electricity provided by the three discoms i.e electricity distribution companies. A senior of discom official stated that the figures show how eager Delhi is to lead India's EV transition and how important the discoms are. He further said that they are laying the groundwork for a sustainable future by actively participating in the development and promotion of EV infrastructure. The updated data also reflects the contribution of&nbsp;EV passenger services. The NCR-based biggest EV ride-hailing company- Blu Smart Mobility has uplifted EVs' extensive use on Delhi roads. The company provides electric energized passenger service via its 3200 EVs which are reported to get charged twice a day. Following the high adoption rate, the Delhi government's goal is to guarantee that 25% of all new car registrations in the city be electric vehicles by 2024, while the Government of India aspires for a 30% EV penetration by 2030. Over 1,20,000 EVs have been registered in Delhi since August 2020. There are 256 battery switching stations, 1,550 private charging stations, and 2,794 public charging stations in the city.

BluSmart, a Gurugram headquartered electric vehicle cab service provider is all set to start its operations in Mumbai, as per the Dec.28th announcement made by the company on&nbsp;X (formerly Twitter). Before the cab services open, the company has opted to invite selected users to join an early “invite-only” experience. According to BluSmart, it would first provide the electric transportation facility to a select few individuals via a private registration process. Riders who are interested can submit a form with their name, contact information, and email address. Following submission, these users will have the opportunity to test the service before it is formally made available to the entire city. "Starting January 1, 2025, BluSmart is here to make your journeys reliable, safer, and always on time,” the company tweeted in its post.&nbsp; “After months of dedication and hard work, we’re excited to bring this dream to life in your city,” the post further read.

Furthermore, delivering current fluctuations of several amperes to a battery can result in severe electrical stress, raising the danger of battery failure or fire due to sensitivity and precision constraints. The KAIST technology minimises heat impacts and safety concerns during the measurement procedure by accurately measuring battery impedance with low current disturbances. It simplifies the integration of large and expensive components into EVs. The auto component industry of India has overcome the fear and the initial scepticism to align with the EV transition, Vinnie Mehta, Director General of ACMA, said.&nbsp; Citing Mehta, Autocar professional, “Five to six years ago, there was a lot of apprehension, Nobody says anything anymore. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Underlining the urgent requirement for a unified charging app linked to the Bharat digital stack, Shah discussed offering real-time data, location, cost and availability of charging points to consumers. "Charging infrastructure is going to be critical in the next phase of EV adoption. We need to work with the private sector and the government to bring all charging stations under one platform, making it easier for consumers to find, use, and pay for charging services," citing Shah, CNBC-TV 18 reported. Additionally, he mentioned that the Ministry of Heavy Industries and FICCI have been collaborating closely to establish a plan for charging stations along highways, optimising locations based on traffic statistics. Moreover, Shah highlighted the role of FICCI in attempts to overcome infrastructure limitations to reach the desirable EV adoption target, the report added.&nbsp; According to the report, Shah stated, "We are working on a long-term plan to set up charging points strategically across the country. This will drive investment and make the transition to electric vehicles smoother,"&nbsp; Shah also spoke about the ongoing discussion about rate cuts on the larger economic front. While acknowledging the requests for lower interest rates, he registered a concern that any action of that nature must avoid contributing to inflation. According to the report, Shah praised the efforts of the Reserve Bank of India in effectively managing inflation. However, he asserted his take for the RBI to be cautious and balanced in their approach. “Inflation is not a worry today, but it should not become one in the future," he said.”

Citing Urja Mobility's founder and CEO, Pankaj Chopra, Inc42 reported that the business has already diluted 25% of its entire shares.&nbsp; Chopra founded Urja Mobility, a New Delhi-based EV battery solution firm, in 2023. The company rents batteries to EV users and fleet operators on a pay-per-use basis. Last year, the business received an unknown sum from Mufin Green Finance.&nbsp; It is largely focused on commercial EVs and claims to sell 45 MWh of electricity each day.&nbsp;Going ahead, the business aims to "sell" 300 Megawatt Hours (MWh) of energy every day.&nbsp; "This fundraising round represents a significant milestone for us. Our mission is to transform energy usage in the emobility industry while increasing our footprint throughout India. The pay-per-use model we've implemented makes emobility more accessible, and this money will allow us to expand our retail presence and give solutions to a larger audience," Chopra said.&nbsp; Kapil Garg, founder and director of Mufin Green Finance, commented on the fundraiser, saying, "We are thrilled to support Urja Mobility's journey. He further emphasized that the state's strategic objectives and policies indicate a determined effort to establish a strong EV infrastructure and encourage sustainable mobility. In the data shown, Bengaluru Urban District is the state's largest contributor accounting for over 85% of all charging stations. Bengaluru City alone has around 4,462 charging stations. "Karnataka has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the electric vehicle sector, becoming India's first state to implement an EV policy in 2017. This pioneering plan was strengthened in 2021 with additional incentives, indicating the state's consistent commitment to improving electric mobility. Looking ahead, the government plans to construct model EV towns throughout Karnataka, a strategic initiative aimed at considerably increasing EV adoption and developing a sustainable transportation framework for the future,” according to an energy department statement.&nbsp; The charging stations across the state are supported through a variety of programs, including the Union government's Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) plan, BESCOM's investments, green cess funding from the state transportation department, and public-private collaborations. In February 2024 Karnataka state budget has plans to establish approximately 2,500 more EV charging stations across the state via public public-private partnership model. “Additionally, the government also plans to invest Rs 35 crore in setting up 100 charging centres in collaboration with power supply companies, further supporting the growth and accessibility of EV infrastructure in Karnataka,” citing an official statement Deccan Herald reported. Karnataka had the highest number while Maharashtra was second with 3728 followed by Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

"At the domestic level, there is currently no regulation requiring housing societies and residential complexes to provide shared charging stations. That must be dealt with," he remarked.
