Charge Your EV While Driving: France inaugurates EV charging motorable road

For the first time ever in the world, France has inaugurated a motorable road that can charge electric vehicles while in motion. The motorway is capable of charging passing cars, buses, vans, and medium- and heavy-duty trucks, as per a report by Azernews.

The A10 motorway, with EV-charging capability, was tested by VINCI Autoroutes on a 1.5 km-long section of the road near Paris. Developed by Electreon, Gustave University, VINCI Construction, and Hutchinson, this section of the road can charge vehicles while they are in motion, without any stops or plugs.

According to the report, the test consisted of extensive thermal, mechanical, and power transmission analyses, which gave an average transmission result of over 200 kW with a peak of 300 kW. The energy transmission is twice the amount of energy needed to charge a truck over this distance. The trials analyzed the road’s capability to handle real traffic conditions, the system’s safety, and its durability against vehicles traveling at standard highway speed.

The road has been fitted with coils under the asphalt, which transmit energy to receiving units attached to the vehicles. The technology is designed to provide a stable and continuous energy supply to vehicles while they are in motion.

Moreover, researchers are investigating the prospect of incorporating smart energy management, which would enable cars to dynamically modify charging rates in response to traffic, speed, and battery levels—a preview of a future where highways themselves help power the electric mobility revolution.
