BYD Seal U Plug-In Hybrid SUV Unveiled in India With 1,200 KM Range: Details Here

BYD India has taken off the wraps from its highly anticipated DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) Super Plug-In Hybrid technology. Marking a strategic pivot from its pure electric vehicle portfolio, the automaker confirmed that the BYD Seal U SUV (globally recognized also as the Sealion 6) will be its first ever plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) to launch in India by the end of 2026.

The standout feature of this new premium powertrain is its massive, anxiety-busting combined driving range of over 1,200 km on a full tank and a single charge.

The Technology: What is BYD’s DM-i Super Plug-In Hybrid System?

Unlike traditional parallel hybrids common in the Indian automotive market, BYD’s DM-i setup works on an "electric-first" philosophy. The vehicle acts primarily as an EV, utilizing its battery pack and electric motors to drive the wheels, while the petrol engine runs mostly to support or recharge the system.

The sophisticated mechanical heart of the BYD Seal U consists of:

  • A high-efficiency 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine boasting an industry-leading thermal efficiency of 43.04%.

  • An 18.3 kWh BYD Blade Battery pack paired with dual high-efficiency electric motors.

  • An intelligent system that seamlessly auto-shifts between three distinct driving modes based on real-time traffic conditions: Pure EV Mode, Series Hybrid Mode, and Parallel Hybrid Mode.

Key Performance & Features of the Upcoming BYD Seal U PHEV

The premium mid-size SUV measures a generous 4.7 meters in length with a 2,765mm wheelbase, positioning it squarely to compete against premium five-seater SUVs in India.

Driving Range & Charging

Thanks to the large 18.3 kWh battery pack, the Seal U offers a pure electric range of up to 70 km. This makes it ideal for zero emission, fuel free daily city commutes. For long distance weekend trips, the combined petrol-electric powertrain delivers a jaw dropping driving range exceeding 1,200 km. Furthermore, being a plug-in hybrid, the vehicle can be plugged into standard or fast DC chargers to top up the battery independently.

Cabin, Tech & Performance Comforts

  • Performance: Can sprint from 0-100 km/h in an impressive 5.9 seconds.

  • Signature Display: Includes a premium, center-mounted 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen infotainment unit coupled with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

  • Comfort & Safety: Features heated/ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual wireless charging pads, Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capabilities to power external appliances directly via the car battery.

Bridging the Gap in India’s Green Mobility Shift

Speaking on the introduction of the technology, Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India, highlighted that the DM-i platform serves as a vital bridge for Indian car buyers who want EV-like fuel efficiencies and seamless electric driving traits, but are not completely ready to switch to pure battery electric vehicles due to highway charging limitations.

With the launch set for the tail end of 2026, the Seal U DM-i is expected to bring highly sophisticated PHEV performance historically limited to high-end luxury brands to a much more accessible premium price segment in India.
