BMW i3 Electric Sedan Revealed: 900 km Range and 469 PS Power for the Neue Klasse Era

BMW has officially pulled the wraps off the highly anticipated BMW i3 electric sedan, marking a revolutionary shift for the Bavarian automaker. Moving away from the quirky hatchback of the past, the new i3 is a sleek, high performance sedan that serves as a precursor to the next generation electric 3 Series.

Built on the dedicated 'Neue Klasse' platform, the i3 is the second model (after the iX3) to utilize this advanced 800 volt architecture, setting new benchmarks for range, charging speed, and digital integration.

Performance: The i3 50 xDrive

At launch, the spotlight is on the i3 50 xDrive variant. This model features a dual motor setup delivering a combined output of 469 PS (345 kW) and a massive 645 Nm of torque.

The drivetrain utilizes a unique combination of a synchronous motor on the rear axle for primary propulsion and an asynchronous motor at the front for added traction and efficiency. This setup is managed by the new "Heart of Joy" control system, which BMW claims is ten times faster than previous systems in managing brakes, energy recuperation, and steering functions.

900 km Range and Ultra-Fast Charging

Range anxiety is set to become a thing of the past with the new i3. While the exact battery capacity remains under wraps, BMW has confirmed a maximum range of 900 km (WLTP cycle).

Key technical highlights include:

  • 800V Architecture: Enables ultra fast charging.

  • 400 kW DC Charging: The i3 can recoup 400 km of range in just 10 minutes.

  • 6th Gen eDrive: Features cylindrical battery cells for higher energy density and compact packaging.

  • V2L Capability: Supports Vehicle to Load functions, allowing the car to power external appliances or act as a home backup.

Design: Future Meets Heritage

The exterior design of the BMW i3 is clean and minimalist. It features a reimagined, wider kidney grille that integrates lighting elements and "fang like" LED DRLs. The signature Hofmeister kink at the C-pillar remains but has been modernized with a stronger visual presence.

Inside, the cabin is dominated by a 17.9 inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, the most striking feature is the BMW Panoramic Vision a display that stretches across the entire width of the lower windshield, complemented by an optional 3D head up display.

Launch Timeline and Rivals

Production of the BMW i3 is scheduled to begin in August 2026 at the Munich plant, with global deliveries expected to start around September or October.

Once launched, the i3 will directly challenge the Tesla Model 3, the Mercedes Benz C-Class EV, and the Audi A4 e-tron. For the Indian market, the i3 will be a crucial addition to BMW’s growing EV portfolio, potentially arriving as a premium CBU or CKD offering following its global rollout.
