According to him, high tariffs will boost manufacturing in the US which will rebalance trade with other countries, and improve government finances. The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. Dua has more than thirty years of experience in brand building, digital transformation, and strategic leadership in a variety of businesses.&nbsp; In his previous position as Group CEO of Dish TV, Dua was important in a number of important projects, such as the company's merger with Videocon D2H, the adoption of digital transformation, and the reduction of its debt from more than 3,000 crores to debt-free status in 2023. Under his leadership, Dish TV won accolades including the Economic Times' Best Brand Award and pioneered innovations like hybrid set-top boxes. In addition, Dua has held senior positions with Hero MotoCorp, Gillette, Unilever, and OTE Group in Oman. Recently, Suzuki Motor Corporation revealed the eVitara, a worldwide model made in India for the globe, in Milan, Italy. "With decades of automotive expertise, we have combined advanced electric technology with a customer-first approach to delivering something truly transformative," Maruti Suzuki Citing Partho Banerjee, India Senior Executive Officer, Marketing &amp; Sales, PTI reported.&nbsp; He further noted that the firm has long held the view that to encourage EV adoption, it must establish a comprehensive ecosystem that makes the process of owning a battery electric vehicle easier for consumers. Banerjee further said, "A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. To tackle this issue, we are committed to introducing a reliable and comprehensive EV ecosystem alongside the eVitara," PTI reported.&nbsp; According to him, this would include both home charging options and a statewide network of fast chargers that are accessible at Maruti Suzuki dealerships and service locations.

Nitin Gadkari, the union cabinet Minister of Road and Transport said on Thursday that the Indian electric vehicle industry has the ability to manufacture 10 times more than the current producing capacity of the market.&nbsp; While speaking at the 8th Catalyst Conference on Sustainability of the E-Vehicle Industry, also known as Ev expo 2024, Gadkari stated that the demand for EVs will only increase and now is the right moment for the business to thrive. Further, Gadkari mentions India’s capability to rise to the number 1 position in the automobile industry within the next five years. Currently, India is the third largest automobile industry of the world.

The auto component industry of India has overcome the fear and the initial scepticism to align with the EV transition, Vinnie Mehta, Director General of ACMA, said.&nbsp; Citing Mehta, Autocar professional, “Five to six years ago, there was a lot of apprehension, Nobody says anything anymore. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Automobile OEMs are no longer fearful of EV transition

With distribution agreements in Canada and Australia, Versinetic, a UK-based EV charger manufacturer has launched its LinkRay Distribution Partner Program. Under the program, distributors are provided with exclusive regional distribution rights, access to the company's EV charging technology, and training and technical assistance. LinkRay is a load-balancing controller of Verinetic which is specially manufactured for EV charging stations. Adjusting power delivery as per the required demand, the controller can distribute power among several charging points at the same time. According to the business, it saves charging times, ensures consistent performance across many EVs, and optimises electrical resources to lower installation and operating costs. Installers of AC and DC chargers in multi-unit buildings, including office spaces, apartment complexes and condominiums, can use it. To facilitate remote control and real-time monitoring of regions with numerous meters, switchboards, or transformers, Versinetic also intends to implement Link Aggregation, a new scalable feature that tiers multiple LinkRay devices. With Delhi leading the path of EV penetration, the adoption of electric vehicles in India is booming, a report by FICCI and Yes Bank showed.&nbsp; According to the report, Delhi's adoption of EVs across a number of segments has led to an EV penetration rate of 11.5%. Kerala, where the use of electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) and three-wheelers (e3Ws) has been substantial, comes in second at 11.1%, followed by Assam at 10.0%. Furthermore, from FY21 to FY24, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Punjab had the highest compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in EV sales, highlighting the significance of states working together and exchanging effective tactics. More than half of the EV volumes in FY24 came from the top five states, according to the data, and the distribution of EV sales has improved over the previous four years. As India works to meet its net-zero targets, it underlined how important states are to the country's EV transition. The report urged a doubling of the current EV penetration rate to meet national targets by 2030. It called for states to renew their EV policies until 2030, emphasizing the need to mandate EV adoption in public transport and fleet operations. Hyundai’s next big offering to the Indian auto industry is going to be the Creta EV, set to launch in January next year. Marking a cross-section of ICE and EV in design the vehicle will retain classic looks with some additional EV-specific elements like new aero wheels, a charging port up front and a fresh steering wheel. The 2025 Hyundai Creta EV is anticipated to feature a split headlight design, updated front and back bumpers, front and rear LED light bars, and a blanked-off grille as key design features. The model's interior will have technologies including wireless mobile charging, two 10.25-inch screens, an ADAS suite, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Although the company has not yet revealed the technical details of the upcoming Creta EV, the vehicle is expected to have a 50–60 kWh battery pack that could take the vehicle 500 km on a single full charge.&nbsp;

The partnership intends to minimise the carbon footprint of Altigreen's electric vehicles while promoting ethical and sustainable practices within the electric mobility industry. The collaborators will create a cutting-edge framework for fulfilling Alitgreen's goals for ethical battery recycling and disposal. Alitgreen will be able to easily accomplish these objectives thanks to Lohum, an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) partner recognised under India's Battery Waste Management Rules (BWMR 2022). In accordance with this cooperation, Lohum will recycle Altigreen electric vehicle end-of-life batteries using its 'NEETM' technology, recovering 95% of high-purity battery raw materials that may be utilised to create new batteries. Over the next three years, the cooperation will allow it to recycle 1 GWh of Altigreen EV freight vehicle batteries, significantly reducing battery waste and maximising resource use. Founder and CEO of Altigreen, Dr. Amitabh Saran, stated, "At Altigreen, we believe that sustainability is at the heart of our purpose. Through this agreement, we will be able to manage our electric car batteries properly, limiting waste and the environmental effect of our operations. It has recently completed funding the ₹3,000 crore it had intended from TII and other investors to support its numerous electric car initiatives.&nbsp; "The e-HCV trucks are in the early stages of their sales cycle, while the e3w is performing well in southern markets and is currently entering the northern market," stated Executive Chairman M.A.M. Arunachalam. The company will launch its E-tractors in three variants which are currently going through extensive testing to determine their endurance, battery economy, and performance. The inbuilt platforms are all designed with agriculture and haulage requirements in mind. It will be a strong alternative to traditional tractors and compete with them in every manner. According to the manufacturer, they are inexpensive, emit no pollutants, and operate silently thanks to replaceable, rechargeable batteries. Its development includes a strong dealer and service network that will be available in four states at launch including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Moreover, an advanced facility is being built in Chennai to accommodate the demand that arises from post-launch promotional activities. To produce eSCVs in the range of 2T to 3.5T, a new manufacturing plant is being built at Gummidipundi, near Chennai. Reportedly, the USP of the upcoming vehicle is its range and utility. However, as of right now, the vehicle is still in its initial version of being tested. After arduous testing, the prototypes will be released onto the market in Q2 of FY25, at which point additional versions will be developed.

Similar to the Casper, the interior design has a central 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen and a similarly sized cluster of digital instruments. The most obvious modification is that, in contrast to the car it is based on, the gear selector is now behind the steering wheel. In addition, the dashboard's controls have been significantly updated, and a new steering wheel featuring Hyundai's EV emblem is included. The EV comes equipped with a sunroof, wireless charging port, heated front seats, and a steering wheel in addition to 64-color LED ambient lighting. Companies that have been found to be innocent should start receiving subsidies by the end of this month. The registration of non-electric two-wheelers, whether permanent or temporary, will not be permitted in Chandigarh once the registration objectives for these vehicles have been met because the policy's registration quota for the next year is NIL. According to him, the goal for non-electric two-wheelers will likely be reached by the first week of July, and the goal for four-wheelers will probably be met by the end of the year. This is to let people know that registrations for two-wheelers would finish by the first week of July and for four-wheelers by the end of the year, he added. Following UT's decision, the Federation of Chandigarh Region Automobile Dealers Association said that UT is requiring individuals to purchase electric automobiles, which will have a negative economic impact on 10,000 people. The federation further said, “More than 2500 individuals are now employed. When July comes, where will they go? The estimated inventory is roughly worth Rs 100 crore, while the typical startup costs for a dealer are Rs 5 crore.” According to the federation, they are forced to shut down dealerships, and the majority of two-wheeler dealers would go out of business. Economically, around 10,000 individuals will be impacted. They further claimed that the government is taking away their jobs amid the present unemployment situation. The lowest feasible aim for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, or passenger cars, is 70% each in 2023, while the target for electric three-wheelers and four-wheelers, which are used to transport goods, is 40% each. The goal is raised to 20% for personal usage of e-cars, and in the second year, to 50% for e-buses. Similarly, the goal for e-two-wheelers and e-three-wheelers, or passenger autos, in years three, four, and five is 100%, meaning that starting in 2024, the registration of fuel-based two-wheelers and autos will end completely. The goal for personal e-cars is 30%, 40%, and 50% for 2024, 2025, and 2026, respectively.&nbsp; The aim established for e-buses is 100% by the fifth year, which implies that no further fuel-based buses will be registered at all.
