After success in China, BYD Seagull plans to expand worldwide
BYD’s cheapest offering in China, the BYD Seagull, costing from 69,800 yuan (approximately $9,300/₹8 lakh), has crossed the one million unit sales milestone in its first 25 months since its launch in April 2023.
Last year, the Seagull had already surpassed Tesla’s Y model, making it the top-selling EV in China’s market. In the same year,
With 60,131 sold in May 2025 alone, it sold more automobiles than any other vehicle last year, including ICE models.
The BYD Seagull is currently making an impact in international markets as well. In Europe, it is now called Dolphin Surf, while in Brazil and Mexico, it is called Dolphin Mini.
However, compared to China, its pricing is far less competitive worldwide. For example, it costs more than twice as much in the UK, with prices starting at £18,650 (about $25,000/₹21 lakh).
Although BYD is already present in India, it presently concentrates solely on high-end models such as the Atto 3 and Seal. Price-sensitive Indian consumers may adopt EVs more quickly if the Seagull is introduced, solidifying BYD's position as the industry leader, Acko Drive has reported.
