Adani Group to Build India's Largest Battery Storage Project, Announces Massive 50 GWh Target

The Adani Group has announced its large-scale entry into the energy storage sector with plans for India's largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. The flagship project will have a power capacity of 1126 MW and an energy capacity of 3530 MWh.

This historic project, set to be commissioned by March 2026, will be located at Khavda, Gujarat, as part of the world's largest renewable energy plant.

A Strategic Leap for India's Energy Security

The BESS project is a major step toward enhancing India's energy security and enabling a stable, round-the-clock supply of clean energy. The system is designed to store renewable energy, like solar power, and release it during peak demand hours.

Key functions of the Adani BESS project will include :

  • Grid Stabilization : Reducing transmission congestion and mitigating solar power curtailment.

  • Peak Load Management : Easing pressure on the grid during high-demand periods.

  • Low-Carbon Transition : Playing a critical role in India's journey toward its net-zero goals.

The deployment will involve more than 700 BESS containers, making it one of the largest single-location battery storage deployments in the world.

Adani's Ambitious Roadmap: 50 GWh in 5 Years

This 1126 MW project is just the beginning of the Adani Group's ambitions. The company has laid out a clear and aggressive roadmap for scaling its energy storage footprint:

  • Near-Term Goal : Deploy an additional 15 GWh of BESS capacity by March 2027.

  • Long-Term Target : Achieve a total of 50 GWh over the next five years.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, described energy storage as the "cornerstone of a renewable-powered future."

"With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India's energy independence," Adani said. "This initiative will enable us to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale."

This strategic move positions the Adani Group as a key player in India's clean energy transition, marking a transformative moment for the country's energy storage infrastructure.
