The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. Following the&nbsp; $1.5 billion joint venture of JSW group with China’s SAIC Motor to engineer and sell&nbsp; Morris Garages' electric vehicles, JSW Group is all set to launch its own brand of EVs, Economic Times reported.&nbsp; JSW Chairperson Sajjan Jindal, in an interview with The Financial Times, has said that the company does not wish to work as an “outpost of a Chinese company.”.&nbsp; Jindal said. “We want to manufacture the products in India, value-add in India, and sell in India,” ET reported.&nbsp; The steel giant acquired a 35% stake in MG Motor India from SAIC, earlier this year. The Chinese company partnered with JSW for its Indian operations after facing difficulties securing funds due to India’s strict controls on Chinese investments which were, introduced in 2020 following border clashes between the two countries. Earlier this year, the JSW group secured a 35% stake in MG Motor India from SAIC. Following border hostilities in 2020, India imposed severe limits on Chinese investments, which made it difficult for the Chinese company to secure funding. As a result, the company partnered with JSW to conduct its activities in India. JSW's proposed auto plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, will be devoted to this new EV-focused endeavour, Jindal further disclosed. Aurangabad Industrial City welcomed JSW's projected Rs 27,200 crore investment in commercial cars and EVs in October. The project is anticipated to generate 5,200 jobs. However, the FT report stated that Jindal did not offer further information regarding the particular models or investment plans.

JSW's proposed auto plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, will be devoted to this new EV-focused endeavour.

Make in India boost: JSW to launch its own EV brand

The Italian automaker will continue its three hybrid versions currently available in the market, for as long as possible.&nbsp; In an interview with Autocar, Stephan Winkelmann said, “When we decided to do the first step of our strategy, to have all the line-up new and hybridised, this was a big effort for the company. For the last four years, we have worked very hard on this, and now we see that this was – you never know, but – the right decision. Therefore, we think that to be very focused on a step-by-step approach on [electrification] was the right decision,” the report added Winkelmann stated that Lamborghini's first electric vehicle, which was derived from the past year's segment-bending Lanzador concept, is a brand-new model rather than a substitute for any existing vehicle. It is less likely to have an effect on the company's sales volumes, and it may even boost them. Citing Winkelmann Autocar further reported, “We have enough time to decide if we need to accelerate or delay the introduction of the electric cars,” he said. “So far, we are not thinking about delaying anything. We said we want to have our first electric car by the end of this decade, and this is something which we will continue to foster because we said it has to be an additional car - a fourth model.” Although Winkelmann recognised that the EV adoption curve is not "as steep as forecasted," he added that this is "even more" true for Lamborghini's super-sports vehicle market, meaning the company's plan to "stay hybrid as long as possible is really the right one," the report said.&nbsp;

On suspicion of fraudulently flouting localisation norms to avail subsidies under the FAME-2 scheme, Hero Electric Vehicles Pvt Ltd, Okinawa Autotech International Pvt Ltd and Benling India Energy have been investigated by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office, livemint reported. The Center's EV subsidy program, FAME 2, allowed manufacturers to apply for government subsidies and allowed consumers to purchase EVs at reduced costs. However, the Orignal Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have to fulfil the scheme’s localization norms to enjoy the benefit of the government’s scheme.&nbsp;&nbsp; According to the corporate affairs ministry, all three companies were found to have violated the FAME 2 phased manufacturing program (PMP) standards in order to receive subsidies of ₹297 crore.&nbsp; Mandating the localisation norms for EV OEMs, PMP guidelines give a list of vehicle components that are allowed to be imported, and the time period in which these imports should be phased out.&nbsp; According to the ministry, SFIO investigations showed that several parts that were prohibited by the PMP rules were either directly or indirectly imported from China. There was no quick response to emails sent to Okinawa Autotech and Navin Munjal, managing director of Hero Electric. No one could be reached for comment from Benling India. The update comes after the Ministry of Heavy Industries took proceedings against these corporations for two years. In 2022, MHI began pursuing EV manufacturers who were allegedly violating PMP regulations and sought reimbursement for the subsidies they had been given. In total, 13 companies were being investigated by the ministry including AMO Mobility, Okinawa Autotech, Benling India, Lohia Auto and Hero Electric. Within a few months, AMO Mobility, Greaves Electric Mobility, and Revolt—three of these six automakers—returned the subsidies along with interest.&nbsp; Benling, Okinawa, and Hero Electric, however, did not return the subsidy funds. According to a report by the Economic Times citing government sources, Hero Electric made an attempt to pay the debt with MHI in October of this year while the company's request was being considered.

However, the momentum of sales has continued to remain robust due to traditional manufacturers giving hard competition to market giants like Ola, The Hindu Businessline reported.&nbsp; According to the report, MG Motors, with its new product offering, has replaced&nbsp;Mahindra &amp; Mahindra by acquiring second position in monthly sales. Meanwhile, Tata Motors secured the top rank. After hitting a new sales record of 2.19 lakh units in Oct, the total registration of EVs (in all segments) in November stood at 1.92 lakh units, marking an increase of 25% from November 2023, citing Vahan data, the report added.&nbsp; Meanwhile, in the two-wheeler segment, electric scooters and bikes achieved sales of 1.19 lakh units, marking a 29% increase from November 2023 but registering a decline from 1.40 lakh units in October. Although sales of electric two-wheelers fell from 41,775 units in October to roughly 29,200 units in November, Ola Electric maintained its leading position in the market. In spite of Bajaj's intense battle, TVS Motor managed to maintain its second-place ranking. Bajaj came in second with 26,163 units (down from 28,360 in October), while TVS sold about 26,980 units (down from 30,074 in October). The sales difference between TVS and Bajaj, two more established competitors, and Ola Electric has been progressively closing. The difference is probably going to close as both TVS and Bajaj bring their electric scooters to additional areas. Hero MotoCorp's sales of electric two-wheelers decreased slightly to 7309 from 7337 units the previous month, while Ather's sales were approximately 12,750 units (16,156 units). The volumes of Greaves were around 4470 units (3900 units). Activity in the electric vehicle market has surged since the introduction of the MG Windsor, a new electric vehicle from JSW MG Motor. Approximately 8,585 electric passenger vehicles (PVs) were registered overall in November, after reaching a record 11,150 in October. Despite having fewer numbers than October, November's monthly total was still the second-highest of this fiscal year.&nbsp;

November EV sales data: OLA and TATA on top, MG Motors at No. 2

In an effort to boost the electric vehicle (EV) industry in India, the Centre plans to offer increased incentives to automakers manufacturing electric models in their existing units. The update seeks to boost domestic EV manufacturing while attracting domestic and international businesses to increase their investments in the industry. The government's larger goal under the initiative is to promote a sustainable EV ecosystem in India. The ambition of India's continuing EV policy is to attract international manufacturers, like Tesla, to establish their production facilities in India. To attract manufacturers to establish EV plants with an investment commitment of at least $500 million, the Centre had already drastically lowered import taxes in March. These initiatives are viewed as a step towards positioning India as a major force in the world market for electric vehicles. Automakers will now be able to manufacture electric vehicles in their current production sites thanks to recent regulation modifications. These businesses must, however, fulfil specific requirements, such as manufacturing electric models on different production lines and making sure local sourcing standards are followed. It is anticipated that these adjustments will draw capital from multinational behemoths like Toyota and Hyundai, increasing India's capacity to produce EVs. Meanwhile, industry participants have been asked by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal to accelerate the shift to electric mobility. The goal of the government's drive is to assist India in realising its goal of becoming a country that only uses electric vehicles. The future of electric vehicles in India is anticipated to be significantly shaped by these activities as the nation prepares for this transition.

GOI to increase incentives to boost domestic EV manufacturing

Following the expected expiration of the Delhi EV policy on June 30, the cabinet has decided to extend the policy till March 2025, Chief Minister Atishi stated. “Subsidies for electric vehicles sold after January 1, 2024, will be transferred to buyers’ accounts, and road tax exemptions will be provided to EV buyers,” citing Atishi Hindustan Times reported. Hailing the decision, Arvind Kejriwal posted on X “Congratulations to the people of Delhi. The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy is being restarted.” The state government initiated the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy in August 2020 to provide subsidies for the purchase of EVs. Atishi said, “The result of this policy was that, in 2019-20, the number of EVs registered in Delhi was less than 4% of total vehicles. After the implementation of this policy, by 2023-24, more than 12% of registered vehicles in Delhi were electric, the highest in the country and double the national average of 6%,” HT reported.&nbsp;

The update may hamper the import of steel, which originates in nations like Canada and Mexico and is essential for constructing solar farms, wind turbines, and other renewable energy infrastructure, frequently. U.S. businesses may have to pay an extra $1.1 billion to $4.2 billion for steel as a result of tariffs. The plan, which Trump unveiled on Monday on his social media site Truth Social, has the potential to harm the U.S. EV sector and disrupt international trade, a report by InsideEVs stated. With 75% of the world's battery cells and 85% of its anodes produced, China is the market leader in batteries worldwide. Proposed tariffs may more than quadruple the cost of lithium-ion batteries, which U.S. companies imported from China for $4 billion in 2022.&nbsp; The U.S. is the biggest importer of EVs, with $44 billion in imports last year, thus the market for EVs would also be negatively impacted. Trump's planned tariffs, which would mostly affect cars from Mexico, which exports EVs manufactured by Ford and GM, may raise the price of EVs by $4.4 billion to $8.8 billion, depending on the duty rate.

President-elect Trump’s “America first” policy may hamper EV trade

Mahindra and Mahindra have launched India’s first born sport utility electric cars, the BE 6e and XEV 9e. Made from the ground up, the BE 6e will cost ₹18.9 lakh and the XEV 9e is priced at ₹21.9 lakh.&nbsp; The vehicles are reportedly part of the company’s plan to launch 6 electric vehicles under the XEV and BE brands, with the rest of the vehicles scheduled to be launched by 2028.&nbsp; The company will start the delivery in the fourth quarter of this fiscal year. Ahead of the two new EVs' release, the SUV manufacturer is also updating its dealer network in major international cities. The pricing of the vehicles is set to compete against the well-known mid and premium ICE SUVs. To compete with impending EV releases like Hyundai's Creta EV, the strategy aims to draw in budget-conscious consumers while providing a premium feature set. Both the vehicles are engineered on Mahindra’s INGLO platform Powered by lithium iron phosphate battery packs, the BE 6e and XEV 9e have ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)-certified ranges of up to 682 km and 656 km, respectively. Using a 175kW DC charger, the fast charging option enables the batteries to move from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes. From its ₹16,000 crore EV budget for FY22–FY27, the company is investing ₹4,500 crore, with an emphasis on advanced technologies, product development, and production scaling. Mahindra is aiming to produce 10,000 EVs from the ground up in its Pune factory by March 2025. The BE 6e and XEV 9e's mentioned prices are for their 59kWh battery versions. The blade cells in the battery packs' cell-to-pack design use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry that is obtained by BYD Auto, a Chinese original equipment manufacturer.

Meanwhile, 56 % want to purchase an EV to benefit the environment.&nbsp; The study further showed that 60 % of Indians believed that India’s public infrastructure is not well equipped yet. Hence the framework needs to be more developed to support EV culture.
