According to him, high tariffs will boost manufacturing in the US which will rebalance trade with other countries, and improve government finances. The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. Whereas, when it comes to pricing, it is highly unlikely that any Indian EV company will significantly change the cost of its EV due to this update.

Dua has more than thirty years of experience in brand building, digital transformation, and strategic leadership in a variety of businesses.&nbsp; In his previous position as Group CEO of Dish TV, Dua was important in a number of important projects, such as the company's merger with Videocon D2H, the adoption of digital transformation, and the reduction of its debt from more than 3,000 crores to debt-free status in 2023. Under his leadership, Dish TV won accolades including the Economic Times' Best Brand Award and pioneered innovations like hybrid set-top boxes. In addition, Dua has held senior positions with Hero MotoCorp, Gillette, Unilever, and OTE Group in Oman. Recently, Suzuki Motor Corporation revealed the eVitara, a worldwide model made in India for the globe, in Milan, Italy. "With decades of automotive expertise, we have combined advanced electric technology with a customer-first approach to delivering something truly transformative," Maruti Suzuki Citing Partho Banerjee, India Senior Executive Officer, Marketing &amp; Sales, PTI reported.&nbsp; He further noted that the firm has long held the view that to encourage EV adoption, it must establish a comprehensive ecosystem that makes the process of owning a battery electric vehicle easier for consumers. Banerjee further said, "A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. To tackle this issue, we are committed to introducing a reliable and comprehensive EV ecosystem alongside the eVitara," PTI reported.&nbsp; According to him, this would include both home charging options and a statewide network of fast chargers that are accessible at Maruti Suzuki dealerships and service locations.

Nitin Gadkari, the union cabinet Minister of Road and Transport said on Thursday that the Indian electric vehicle industry has the ability to manufacture 10 times more than the current producing capacity of the market.&nbsp; While speaking at the 8th Catalyst Conference on Sustainability of the E-Vehicle Industry, also known as Ev expo 2024, Gadkari stated that the demand for EVs will only increase and now is the right moment for the business to thrive. Further, Gadkari mentions India’s capability to rise to the number 1 position in the automobile industry within the next five years. Currently, India is the third largest automobile industry of the world.

The auto component industry of India has overcome the fear and the initial scepticism to align with the EV transition, Vinnie Mehta, Director General of ACMA, said.&nbsp; Citing Mehta, Autocar professional, “Five to six years ago, there was a lot of apprehension, Nobody says anything anymore. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Automobile OEMs are no longer fearful of EV transition

With distribution agreements in Canada and Australia, Versinetic, a UK-based EV charger manufacturer has launched its LinkRay Distribution Partner Program. Under the program, distributors are provided with exclusive regional distribution rights, access to the company's EV charging technology, and training and technical assistance. LinkRay is a load-balancing controller of Verinetic which is specially manufactured for EV charging stations. Adjusting power delivery as per the required demand, the controller can distribute power among several charging points at the same time. According to the business, it saves charging times, ensures consistent performance across many EVs, and optimises electrical resources to lower installation and operating costs. Installers of AC and DC chargers in multi-unit buildings, including office spaces, apartment complexes and condominiums, can use it. To facilitate remote control and real-time monitoring of regions with numerous meters, switchboards, or transformers, Versinetic also intends to implement Link Aggregation, a new scalable feature that tiers multiple LinkRay devices. With Delhi leading the path of EV penetration, the adoption of electric vehicles in India is booming, a report by FICCI and Yes Bank showed.&nbsp; According to the report, Delhi's adoption of EVs across a number of segments has led to an EV penetration rate of 11.5%. Kerala, where the use of electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) and three-wheelers (e3Ws) has been substantial, comes in second at 11.1%, followed by Assam at 10.0%. Furthermore, from FY21 to FY24, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Punjab had the highest compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in EV sales, highlighting the significance of states working together and exchanging effective tactics. More than half of the EV volumes in FY24 came from the top five states, according to the data, and the distribution of EV sales has improved over the previous four years. As India works to meet its net-zero targets, it underlined how important states are to the country's EV transition. The report urged a doubling of the current EV penetration rate to meet national targets by 2030. It called for states to renew their EV policies until 2030, emphasizing the need to mandate EV adoption in public transport and fleet operations. With practical suggestions to improve ZEV adoption nationwide, the research offered a road map for bridging the gap between aspiration and implementation. EV penetration rate booming in India, Delhi takes lead: Report

Hyundai’s next big offering to the Indian auto industry is going to be the Creta EV, set to launch in January next year. The company is expected to launch the prices and specs of the vehicle at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo The EV will be based on Creta’s ICE counterpart which was launched in India earlier this year. Marking a cross-section of ICE and EV in design the vehicle will retain classic looks with some additional EV-specific elements like new aero wheels, a charging port up front and a fresh steering wheel. The 2025 Hyundai Creta EV is anticipated to feature a split headlight design, updated front and back bumpers, front and rear LED light bars, and a blanked-off grille as key design features. The model's interior will have technologies including wireless mobile charging, two 10.25-inch screens, an ADAS suite, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Although the company has not yet revealed the technical details of the upcoming Creta EV, the vehicle is expected to have a 50–60 kWh battery pack that could take the vehicle 500 km on a single full charge.&nbsp;

 Hyundai to launch Creta EV at Bharat Mobility Expo 2025

Servotech Power Systems, an EV charger manufacturer, has received a contract from Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) to install 11 DC rapid EV charging stations. The update calls for Servotech to install public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 11 Regional Transport Office (RTO) locations throughout Karnataka to improve the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and make it easier for EV owners to charge their vehicles in different parts of the state. Servotech will take charge of the complete project lifecycle, from planning and design to final installation. This will involve creating a comprehensive plan for installing EV charging stations at each RTO location while assuring optimal placement and capacity.&nbsp;The company will manufacture, build and test high-quality charging stations according to the stringent safety and performance requirements. In addition, Servotech will provide warranty support and manage all electrical connections and power supply arrangements. Sarika Bhatia, Director of Servotech Power Systems, stated, "We are building our green footprints in every state and region of India. With recent collaborations with ANERT and now BESCOM, our strong ambition to create an EV charging framework becomes stronger by the day, and we intend to expand our footprint in the future by cooperating with more Nodal Agencies and DISCOMs. Our efficient hardware and software solutions will enable dependable EV charging stations, responding to the rising demand for sustainable transportation choices.”

Servotech signs contract with BESCOM 

Mercedes-Benz plans to launch a 5-seater variant of the EQS electric SUV called EQS 450 and a fully electric version of the G-Wagon on Jan.9, 2025.&nbsp; As per the recent reports, the EQS 450 will be the company’s second offering in India after the EQS 580 4Matic SUV which is only available in a seven-seat configuration.&nbsp; Sharing similarities with its seven-seater sibling, the upcoming electric car will come with the same 122 kWh battery pack. Currently, the vehicle claims the highest cell capacity for any passenger EV in India. The vehicle with its twin-motor set up will be able to produce 538 bhp and 858 Nm of peak torque. In addition, using a 200kW DC fast charger, users can charge their ride from 10 to 80 per cent in just 31 minutes. Maintaining a known design, the base-level EQS SUV will come with LED headlamps connected by a light bar and a blanked-off grille. By 2030 it is projected that the initiative would save over 11.2 million litres of petrol while avoiding about 25,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere. At the same time, it is expected that the project will supply charging stations with equal amounts of 22,700 megawatt hours of electricity and 6.2 megawatts of renewable energy capacity. Besides, this update is estimated to create about 185 permanent jobs during the same period. The initiative is expected to have enough capacity to cater for approximately 9,500 EVs. Based on increased demand the project is anticipated to support more than 5,500 EVs in Bengaluru by 2030. Presently Doddakallasandra has become Bengaluru’s first EV charging station which fulfils all daily EV-charging requirements, promoting the construction of five more charging stations by the end of this year. Sally Fouts, Global Leader of The Climate Pledge, stated that the action will help India's transition to electric cars, particularly Bengaluru's objective of having 100% EVs for three-wheelers, cab services, and corporate fleets by 2030. The post reads, “Our mission is to let people use batteries without worries,” According to the reports, the company is expected to collaborate with different third-party stakeholders to produce efficient indoor batteries.&nbsp; At 15.8% of the worldwide EV battery market in 2023, BYD is the second-biggest manufacturer in the world. Until now their batteries were used in electric cars and stationary storages, but after the update, BYD may soon be seen in electric scooters and e-bikes segments as well.&nbsp; Currently in India, BYD operates only in the 4-wheeler segment and plans to further scale the business. However, the ambition to grow further in India saw an impediment when the government rejected BYD’s proposal of investing $1Bn in the Indian domestic market.&nbsp; At the same time, the discussion of EV giant Tesla with the government to enter the Indian EV market has been at its peak. In each of these versions, the Punch EV's charging time and capacity will be 3.3 kW AC, 7.2 kW AC, and 50 kW DC fast charging. To start with, the 3.3 kW AC charger for the extended range type would fully charge a battery from 10 to 100% in around 13.5 hours. The 7.2 kW AC charger, meanwhile, would do the same task in five hours. But in just 56 minutes, the 50kWDC rapid charger will reach 10-80%. The 3.3 kW AC will charge the medium-range Punch EV from 10 to 100% in 9.4 hours, while the 7.2 kW AC charger would take 5 hours. Regarding the 50 kW DC rapid charging, the SUV will reach 10-80% capacity in 56 minutes, in line with the long-range model. Apart from the recently disclosed details regarding battery packs and motors, we already know about the unique characteristics the SUV will have. It will have several high-end features from the existing Tata SUV series, such as an illuminated Tata logo on the steering wheel and a touch panel for the AC settings. In terms of features, the Punch EV will have a 10.25-inch touchscreen system, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, ventilated front seats, cruise control, an air purifier, a rotary drive mode selector, six airbags, ESP, and multi-mode regen. What will be the price? Tata has added a lot of additional features to the Punch EV, so the price will likely increase. According to an audit done by SMEV's chartered accountants, the total damages suffered by these businesses may reach 9,000 crore. The losses include unpaid fees, interest, debt, diminished market share, harm to reputation, cost of capital, and probable recapitalisation as a result of the Ministry of Heavy Industries' 2022 suspension of their subsidies. Some businesses would never be able to recoup from these losses, according to SMEV. Sanjay Kaul, the chief evangelist for SMEV, has emphasised the need of finding a solution to this problem and called attention to the irony that, even as the Indian EV industry is in negotiations with prospective investors to invest $1 billion there, the losses incurred by these firms already equal that sum. The delivery of subsidies was therefore postponed. With a budget of 10,000 crores, the government introduced the FAME-II initiative in 2019 to encourage electric and hybrid vehicles in India.
