The Decision It is safe to say that the steps taken by Trump’s administration do represent the majoritarian will of the American people as he was already advocating for a 60 per cent tariff on imports from China, and 10-20 per cent on others. According to him, high tariffs will boost manufacturing in the US which will rebalance trade with other countries, and improve government finances. The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. Recently, Suzuki Motor Corporation revealed the eVitara, a worldwide model made in India for the globe, in Milan, Italy. "With decades of automotive expertise, we have combined advanced electric technology with a customer-first approach to delivering something truly transformative," Maruti Suzuki Citing Partho Banerjee, India Senior Executive Officer, Marketing &amp; Sales, PTI reported.&nbsp; He further noted that the firm has long held the view that to encourage EV adoption, it must establish a comprehensive ecosystem that makes the process of owning a battery electric vehicle easier for consumers. Banerjee further said, "A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. It's an interesting transition that we are doing.” This might be related to the fact that several of the formerly reluctant manufacturers are now adjusting and have become top suppliers of EV components to major automakers worldwide. In contrast, past discussions within the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) were dominated by worries about decreased business opportunities and job losses. EV sales in India are still small in comparison to the conventional vehicle market, despite the change in attitude. India produced about 100,000 electric cars and 900,000 electric two-wheelers last year, but these were far less than the 20 million two-wheelers and 5 million internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. ICE vehicles will continue to dominate the industry, holding 70% of the market, as the government aims for a 30% EV adoption rate by 2030. Mehta claims that the auto parts industry will be "much bigger than what it is today" and highlights that there is plenty of room for both EVs and conventional vehicles in the growing automotive market. Mehta, however, cited a "chicken and egg" scenario in which low manufacturing volumes make indigenisation efforts more expensive and did not commit to precise targets for the localisation of EV components. He contends that while the market expands, localisation initiatives are still getting established. The larger localisation effort by ACMA has been going on for a number of years. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and ACMA set targets a few years ago to localise 3% of auto component imports in the next two to three years and another 10-15% over the next five.&nbsp; By 2022, ACMA had already exceeded the original goal, saving Rs 7,000 crore in foreign cash by localising 6% of the imported components valued at Rs 120,000 crore. Mehta contends that localisation is essential for protecting against the rupee's depreciation, which causes it to lose 5–7% of its value every year. Currently, component manufacturers export about 30% of their manufacturing, while the average localisation percentage in India's automobile industry is around 70%. The next phase of India's automotive industry will be defined by striking a balance between domestic and international market demands as the industry continues to shift towards EVs.

Automobile OEMs are no longer fearful of EV transition

With Delhi leading the path of EV penetration, the adoption of electric vehicles in India is booming, a report by FICCI and Yes Bank showed.&nbsp; According to the report, Delhi's adoption of EVs across a number of segments has led to an EV penetration rate of 11.5%. Kerala, where the use of electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) and three-wheelers (e3Ws) has been substantial, comes in second at 11.1%, followed by Assam at 10.0%. Furthermore, from FY21 to FY24, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Punjab had the highest compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in EV sales, highlighting the significance of states working together and exchanging effective tactics. More than half of the EV volumes in FY24 came from the top five states, according to the data, and the distribution of EV sales has improved over the previous four years. As India works to meet its net-zero targets, it underlined how important states are to the country's EV transition. The report urged a doubling of the current EV penetration rate to meet national targets by 2030. It called for states to renew their EV policies until 2030, emphasizing the need to mandate EV adoption in public transport and fleet operations. This will be the second round of discussions; the first took place in April 2024 and included key firms such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, BMW, and Mercedes. Tesla's agent in India, The Asia Group, also attended the meeting. Despite these efforts, just a few firms have expressed a significant desire to participate in the initiative. According to the scheme, Companies must invest at least $500 million (roughly 4,150 crores) over five years in either developing EV manufacturing or putting up charging stations. Firms must create at least 25% domestic value addition (DVA) within three years, increasing to 50% within five years. Approved firms can import electric automobiles at a 15% customs charge on vehicles worth $35,000 or more, as opposed to the standard higher rate. Furthermore, businesses can import up to 8,000 electric vehicles per year at this reduced cost, with unused import permits carried over to the next year.

The Chennai-based company, which is part of the TVS Mobility Group, will also add 10,000 electric two-wheelers to its fleet by March of next year for this operation. It has also teamed with MoEVing, an EV-based logistics startup, to launch Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), which will provide end-to-end vehicle management solutions. He further stated, "In the e-commerce sector, there is a possibility to electrify 10 lakh automobiles within the next 5-10 years.” Citing Raghavan the Moneycontrol reported that there is an immediate requirement to complete at least 10,000 automobiles by March. "The 10,000 vehicles will be electric two-wheelers," the politician said. Talking about the investment necessary to add those new vehicles, he stated that it will range between Rs 100 crore and Rs 150 crore, which will be made by group business TVS Vehicle Mobility alone or with partners. He also stated that the business has begun with the initial distribution of 250 electric two-wheelers and around 50 light commercial vehicles.

However, to go beyond that, equity funding will be required,” according to AREM Chairman and Managing Director Jayadev Galla. ARACT, a subsidiary entity formed in 2021 is in charge of making battery packs, fixed chargers, and individual cells for electric vehicles. Amara Raja said in December 2022 that it is constructing a 16 GWH lithium-ion cell manufacturing and battery pack assembly factory in Telangana. The Amara Raja Group launched phase 1 of the 1.5 GWH battery pack facility in Mahabubnagar district this week, along with a groundbreaking ceremony for their Customer Qualification facility for cell production. Gala said, “Our goal is to have a manufacturing capacity of 16 GWH cells by 2029.” He further emphasized that the company’s capacity increase would be adjusted in accordance with the outcome of the market demand. He continued, "We have not yet decided on the course of action at that point, but we're looking at different options."&nbsp; Giving indication to the company’s intention of listing, he further added that they will seek stake dilution after achieving 50% of the intended production.
