The President-elect announced the tariff imposition on the top trading partners of the USA–Mexico, Canada and China on the social media platform Truth Social.&nbsp; Earlier, the Inflation Reduction Act has already introduced various tax credits for EV companies to set up their manufacturing units in the USA. In fact, according to a report by nrdc.org, the USA has already surpassed China as the most favourable country for EV investments. Now, with the tariff hanging over, it will be interesting to note the reactions of the worldwide EV companies.&nbsp; The effect&nbsp; According to research by economists at the Peterson Institute of International Economics, Trump's policies might wind up costing the average American household more than $2,600 a year. Nonetheless, it seems that both Republicans and Democrats support the concept of increasing tariffs.&nbsp; Free market analysts and advocates of globalisation have shown serious concern over Trump’s decision, as the tariff wars between countries may come at a cost of inflation and global slowdown. Amid such volatility, the comparatively nascent market of electric vehicles has also come under threat.&nbsp;Although, as per studies, the USA only accounts for 7-10% contribution to the global supply chain of EVs, the direct repercussions will be faced by the companies who have their manufacturing or assembly units in the USA.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recent reports by Bloomberg have shown that BYD intends to reduce prices to tackle tariffs and not shift the burden on consumers. The step came after Tesla offered a price cut on its Model Y in China. BYD, the Chinese giant has been in constant competition with Tesla for the rank of No1 in worldwide sales.However, communist China provides a great government intervention to absorb the losses which the company makes in order to remain in the competition. Although this policy is not designed to serve in the long run, BYD has already reported to cut down its prices.&nbsp; Trump’s decision has invoked chances of potential retaliation by Mexico and China, while Canada has started negotiations. Once an advocate of free trade, the USA seems to shift its policy towards protectionist ideas, risking a global slowdown, amid the broken dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The USA as the third largest EV market in the world accounts for 10% of the overall global market worth, after China accounting for 60% and Europe accounting for 25%. However, in the USA, approximately 70% of the sold EVs are domestically manufactured while $19 billion worth of electric vehicles are imported, according to the USA customs clearance website. Hence, it can be said that after the tariffs, the global EV industry may be affected by at least $19 billion. Moreover, the raw material imported from other countries to manufacture EVs may also add to the losses, taking the number to another higher value.&nbsp; Impact on India&nbsp; India is an import-oriented country whose overall trade remains in deficit, however, India has a trade surplus with the USA. That said, if the inflation in the US market rises, the demand in the market will reduce, ultimately leading to a loss of a considerable amount of India’s foreign exchange. It is also interesting to note that in Trump 1.0, India has already lost its Generalised System of Preference (GSP) status which obliged a developed nation to buy certain products from a developing country. However, as per SBI, there has been a significant rise in the trade of India with the USA despite revoking the GSP status which is a good sign for the overall Indian market.&nbsp; With bilateral trade over $120 billion in FY24, the US continues to be India's largest trading partner, marginally surpassing India's trade with China. India's dependence on the US market has increased over the last ten years; currently, 18% of India's exports go to the US, up from 10% in 2010–11. India exports a wide range of products to the US, including engineering equipment, electronics, and textiles. The EV companies planning to launch themselves in the US market might have to change their plans. On the other hand, the earlier cut in the fed rates by the USA might indicate a good time for EV companies to go global. Hence, EV companies must navigate between this opportunity and challenge to make their way to the world. A recent study projects that 15.1 million electric vehicles will be sold worldwide in the upcoming year, accounting for 16.7% of all new automobile sales worldwide. According to the report, sales of BEVs are expected to reach 11.6 million units in 2024, with a nearly 30% annual rise predicted in 2025. According to the S&amp;P Global Mobility research, government policies, tariffs, incentives, and charging infrastructure will all have an impact on growth, which will differ by region. Focusing on specific regions, the data projected that despite a 117% year-over-year increase, the survey found that EVs will only make up 7.5% of all automobile sales in India.&nbsp; The research further showed that EVs will increase by 36% in the US, but their market share will only be 11.2%. However, ten years ahead of schedule, EVs are predicted to surpass ICE-powered vehicles in China for the first time. In central and western Europe, BEVs are anticipated to hold a 20.4% market share and boost their sales by 43.4% annually.

Ather Energy, India’s premium two-electric vehicle manufacturing company, on Dec.30, secured the final approval from the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to release its Initial Public Offering The company's Draft Red Herring Prospectus indicates that the total IPO size may be approximately Rs 4,500 crore, however, the firm has not yet filed its RHP paperwork. Following its rival Ola Electric Mobility's August debut, Ather Energy will be the second business to list on the bourses if the IPO is launched. Ather submitted draft documents on 9 September in an effort to raise money for debt reduction and the construction of an E2W (electric two-wheeler) factory in Maharashtra. In the initial public offering (IPO), promoters and investors will offer 2.2 crore equity shares for sale in addition to a new issue of equity shares valued at Rs 3,100 crore. According to a report by Moneyvcontrol, Ather is trying to achieve a valuation of approximately $2.5 billion. Since its most recent funding, the valuation has doubled. Ather Energy became a unicorn business in August 2024 after securing $71 million in a fresh investment round led by its current partner, the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF). Following the last investment, the company's valuation reached $1.3 billion.

PURE EV, one of India’s leading electric two-wheeler makers has recorded significant cost reductions by achieving energy efficiency at its facility in Telangana.&nbsp; In its statement, the company claimed to have achieved notable operating cost reductions by combining a 500 KWh Energy Storage Solution (ESS) and a 125 KW solar power system with its diesel generator (DG) and grid electricity. In comparison to the prior fiscal year, this strategy led to a 60% decrease in electricity prices and a 65% reduction in DG fuel costs in FY 2024. Further increasing operational efficiency was the 50% reduction in peak load KVA charges. PURE EV intends to develop its infrastructure for renewable energy as part of its long-term sustainability strategy. The company plans to install an additional 500 KWh ESS and 125 KW of solar power capacity by FY 2026. Its goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions at its headquarters and manufacturing sites will be expedited by this development. In its statement, the company claimed to have achieved notable operating cost reductions by combining a 500 KWh Energy Storage Solution (ESS) and a 125 KW solar power system with its diesel generator (DG) and grid electricity. Decreasing its funding from Rs 725Cr to Rs 650 Cr, the UK government’s&nbsp; British International Investment Plc (BII) and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Ltd have revised the terms of their financial tranche for the investment in the Indian automaker’s electric vehicle unit Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd (MEAL). The investment is reported to be completed by March 31. With this, BII will now have invested a total of Rs 1,850 crore in MEAL in two tranches, and it will own a share in MEAL that ranges from 2.6-4.6%. Previously, a total of approximately Rs 1,925 crore was projected to be invested in MEAL. M&amp;M stated that MEAL's overall business plan will not be impacted by the funding shift. The goal of BII's investment is to greatly speed up the availability and uptake of electric vehicles in India and other areas that M&amp;M serves. The money is mostly being used to develop and promote a portfolio of cutting-edge electric SUVs that are of the highest calibre. In the first tranche, BII invested Rs 1,200 crore in MEAL. In addition to BII, Mahindra's electric vehicle division is also owned by Temasek, an investment firm based in Singapore. Temasek declared in 2023 that it will invest Rs 1,200 crore in MEAL for a 1.5–3% share in the business. The BE 6 and XEV 9e, M&amp;M's first lineup of Born Electric SUVs, were introduced in November. They start at Rs 18.9 lakh and Rs 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. Deliveries to the two models, which are based on the INGLO (Intelligent Electric Global) architecture, are anticipated to begin in late February or early March. The Born Electric portfolio is an element of M&amp;M's overall plan to become a major force in the EV industry. By 2027, the business had previously stated that it expected EV penetration to reach 20–30%. A Rs 12,000 crore investment in M&amp;M's electric company MEAL over the following three years was also approved by the board at the beginning of this fiscal year.&nbsp;

M&M, BII decreases final investment tranche in Indian arm of Mahindra Electric 

Releasing draft guidelines on setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) aims to establish more than 22,000 EV chargers for electric four-wheelers, 1,800 chargers for e-buses and much more, according to a report by the Hindu Businessline.&nbsp; The step taken under the Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme, has been shared with various stakeholders to register their inputs/ comments, citing ministry officials, the report added. Moreover, the scheme calls for the installation of charging infrastructure for electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), among other light EVs.&nbsp;&nbsp; The government seeks to promote participation among all of the stakeholders including charge point operators, EV charger manufacturers, state governments, urban local bodies (ULBs), government agencies, central-level ministries, discoms, highway authorities, and other central public sector enterprises (CPSEs). The PM E-DRIVE initiative aims to provide up to 80% subsidy on upstream infrastructure (behind-the-meter infrastructure) with an investment of ₹2,000 crores for the installation of public fast charging stations. It said that in extraordinary circumstances, the Ministry might take into account additional funding up to 100% of the project's cost, including upstream power infrastructure. As per the guidelines, MoPNG, MoRTH, the Ministry of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Ports, and Shipping and Waterways are among the central-level Ministries that will also be required to submit proposals. “State governments and Central Ministries are also encouraged to carry out feasibility studies to identify suitable locations for EV PCS. These site assessments will help identify potential locations based on traffic patterns, proximity to major commercial spaces, land accessibility, sufficient power supply, and potential for grid upgrades to support the additional load,” citing MHI released draft guidelines, the Hindu businessline reported. Based on the data requested in Section 10.3, a technical committee led by an Additional/Joint Secretary, MHI, and comprising representatives from Niti Aayog, the Ministry of Power, and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), will shortlist the suggestions. Following finalisation and communication, MHI will release the incentive in three instalments: 30% of the total amount following the tender's issuance as a mobilisation advance, 40% following the deployment of EVSEs in accordance with the bid documents, and the remaining 30% following the charging stations' successful commercial operation. The MHI said, “This amount will be exclusively used for reimbursement of the upstream infrastructure cost based on the type of charging station. The applicable incentive amount will be released to the ‘tender inviting authority’. However, the Upstream Infrastructure (assets up to the meter) will belong to the relevant Discom in all circumstances,” the Hindu Businessline reported.

On suspicion of fraudulently flouting localisation norms to avail subsidies under the FAME-2 scheme, Hero Electric Vehicles Pvt Ltd, Okinawa Autotech International Pvt Ltd and Benling India Energy have been investigated by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office, livemint reported. The Center's EV subsidy program, FAME 2, allowed manufacturers to apply for government subsidies and allowed consumers to purchase EVs at reduced costs. However, the Orignal Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have to fulfil the scheme’s localization norms to enjoy the benefit of the government’s scheme.&nbsp;&nbsp; According to the corporate affairs ministry, all three companies were found to have violated the FAME 2 phased manufacturing program (PMP) standards in order to receive subsidies of ₹297 crore.&nbsp; Mandating the localisation norms for EV OEMs, PMP guidelines give a list of vehicle components that are allowed to be imported, and the time period in which these imports should be phased out.&nbsp; According to the ministry, SFIO investigations showed that several parts that were prohibited by the PMP rules were either directly or indirectly imported from China. There was no quick response to emails sent to Okinawa Autotech and Navin Munjal, managing director of Hero Electric. No one could be reached for comment from Benling India. The update comes after the Ministry of Heavy Industries took proceedings against these corporations for two years. In 2022, MHI began pursuing EV manufacturers who were allegedly violating PMP regulations and sought reimbursement for the subsidies they had been given. In total, 13 companies were being investigated by the ministry including AMO Mobility, Okinawa Autotech, Benling India, Lohia Auto and Hero Electric. Within a few months, AMO Mobility, Greaves Electric Mobility, and Revolt—three of these six automakers—returned the subsidies along with interest.&nbsp; Benling, Okinawa, and Hero Electric, however, did not return the subsidy funds. According to a report by the Economic Times citing government sources, Hero Electric made an attempt to pay the debt with MHI in October of this year while the company's request was being considered.

Besides, this update is estimated to create about 185 permanent jobs during the same period. The initiative is expected to have enough capacity to cater for approximately 9,500 EVs. Based on increased demand the project is anticipated to support more than 5,500 EVs in Bengaluru by 2030. Presently Doddakallasandra has become Bengaluru’s first EV charging station which fulfils all daily EV-charging requirements, promoting the construction of five more charging stations by the end of this year. Sally Fouts, Global Leader of The Climate Pledge, stated that the action will help India's transition to electric cars, particularly Bengaluru's objective of having 100% EVs for three-wheelers, cab services, and corporate fleets by 2030. "We are happy to be a part of The Climate Pledge's endeavour to create more charging stations. JOULE helps us reach our objective of deploying 10,000 EVs in India by 2025. Greenko, a renewable energy supplier, and Deloitte, a strategic consulting partner, will also help the initiative.

On April 1, the new programme is scheduled to launch, replacing the existing FAME-II programme. The new programme demonstrates the government's efforts to advance electric transportation and meet Net Zero goals. Over four months, the allotted Rs 500 crore would be used to assist about 400,000 e2W and e3W, according to Pandey. In response to growing demand and to decrease the financial strain on electric vehicle manufacturers, the government of India has reduced the maximum subsidy threshold for e2W vehicles from Rs 22,500 to Rs 10,000, and for e3W vehicles from Rs 111,505 to Rs 50,000. Both e2W and e3W will have incentives of Rs 5,000 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). "The increased demand is the reason for the reduction in the subsidy amount. The aim is to support the sector and get it ready for life beyond subsidies,” the minister stated. Every EV player who wants to be eligible for the incentives under the new programme will need to re-register. In the upcoming days, the ministry intends to release the EMPS guidelines. Even though the government is providing incentives for the e2W and e3W categories, the new plan will not provide any incentives of this kind for e4W and e-buses. In the past, the Department of Heavy Industry(DHI )launched the FAME-I scheme with an outlay of Rs.895 crore from 1st April 2015 to 31st March 2019. Following the scheme, DHI rolled out FAME-II with an outlay of 10,000 crore which was later increased to Rs 11,200 crore for the period of 1st April 2019- 31st March 2024. Now, in&nbsp; EMPS 2024, it is to be observed that with the lower budget allocation, the government intends to further promote the spirit of the free market meanwhile, absorbing any shock generated by the conclusion of FAME-II.&nbsp; Since road transport is a state subject, the EMPS scheme also intends to promote the state government's efforts to provide financial incentives. “States need to offer a bouquet of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives. Some such incentives may include waiver / concessional road tax, exemption from permit, waiver / concessional toll tax, waiver /concessional parking fees, concessional registration charges, etc, ” the notification by the central government reads. Despite the reduction of subsidies and changes in regulations, sales of electric vehicles (EVs) have increased significantly this year by more than 45% thus far.
