Delhi sets new record in EV sales: One among five cars is electric!
With a notable increase in
electric vehicle (EV)
sales, Delhi, a city well-known for its high vehicle population, is moving in the right direction towards a greener future. In December of this year, the nation's capital reached a first: over twenty per cent of all sales were electric vehicles. This number solidifies Delhi's position as the nation's EV capital and also marks the greatest monthly sales of EVs ever recorded in India. On social media, Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot praised the year's accomplishments, pointing out that 73,610 of the 6.57 lakh registered vehicles in 2023 were electric, accounting for more than 11% of total sales. Delhi's trend towards electric mobility is unquestionably improving, with March and May coming in second and third, respectively, in terms of EV sales. The Delhi government has extended its EV Policy, which was originally scheduled to expire at the end of 2023, by three months in response to this rising trend. With a target of 25% of all new vehicle registrations by the end of this year, the planned Delhi EV Policy 2.0, which is presently in the final stages of development, promises to be more comprehensive and aims to further promote the adoption of electric vehicles.
One important feature of the new EV policy is its support of retrofitting older vehicles with electric systems, among its many other incentives. Acknowledging the financial obstacle, the government is willing to provide financial aid to increase the accessibility of this choice. It is anticipated that this project would greatly lower the city's pollution levels, especially when combined with the fleet of electric buses and commercial vehicles that are now in service.
