Ola Electric Announces Gen 3 Upgrade Programme: Current Owners Can Now Switch to New ‘Bharat Cell’ Models

In a strategic move to reward brand loyalty and accelerate the adoption of its latest technology, Ola Electric has officially announced a new Upgrade Programme for its existing customer base. The initiative allows owners of Gen 1 and Gen 2 scooters to transition to the highly anticipated Gen 3 platform, which includes the updated S1 series and the new Roadster motorcycle lineup.

Bridging the Gap to Gen 3 Technology

The core of this upgrade program is the transition to Ola’s third generation EV architecture. The Gen 3 models are powered by the company’s in house developed 4680 ‘Bharat’ cells, which promise improved energy density, faster charging capabilities, and better thermal management compared to previous iterations.

By offering an official pathway for current owners to upgrade, Ola aims to ensure that its early adopters are not left behind as the company shifts its entire portfolio toward this more efficient battery technology.

Rollout and Availability

The Upgrade Programme is set to debut in Bengaluru this coming weekend. While the company has confirmed that the program will eventually scale across India, the initial phase will serve as a pilot to streamline the exchange and valuation process.

Key highlights of the Gen 3 Lineup available for upgrade:

  • Ola S1 Z & S1 Gen 3: Entry level and mid range options focusing on urban mobility.

  • Ola S1 Pro Gen 3: The flagship scooter featuring the highest performance specs.

  • Ola Roadster Series: Marks the brand’s entry into the electric motorcycle segment, with prices ranging from ₹82,999 to ₹1,89,999 (ex showroom).

Strategic Customer Retention

This announcement comes at a critical time for the Bengaluru based EV giant. Following a dip in market share in late 2024 and early 2025, coupled with public scrutiny over service efficiency, the Upgrade Programme is seen as a "structural reset."

By focusing on customer retention, Ola Electric is attempting to rebuild trust. Moving existing users onto the Gen 3 platform which features a more simplified manufacturing design may also help the company reduce long term service complexities associated with older generations.

What Owners Need to Know

While the program has been confirmed, Ola Electric has yet to release the specific exchange valuation matrix. It is expected that the trade in value will depend on the age, condition, and mileage of the current Gen 1 or Gen 2 vehicle.

Furthermore, the new models will continue to benefit from the PM E-Drive (formerly FAME) subsidies, though final "on road" pricing for those upgrading will be clarified at the Bengaluru launch event.
