VinFast Patents New Electric Scooter in India: Is the Next-Gen Viper Gearing Up for Launch?
Vietnamese electric vehicle giant VinFast is making aggressive moves to establish its footprint in the booming Indian EV market. While the company is already setting up a massive passenger vehicle manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, a recently filed design patent hints at another major ambition: entering India’s highly lucrative electric two-wheeler segment. VinFast has officially patented a new electric scooter in India, which industry experts believe is the next-generation version of the globally popular VinFast Viper.
A Fresh Take on the Maxi-Scooter Design
The patented design (registered on April 30, 2026) strongly mirrors the current VinFast Viper sold in Vietnam but introduces several sharp, modern updates, suggesting this is a "Gen 2" model.
The scooter retains a tall-boy, maxi-scooter-inspired silhouette that promises a commanding riding posture. Key design and hardware updates revealed in the patent include:
-
Aggressive Front Fascia: A redesigned flyscreen, a sharper front fender, and new side body panels.
-
Modern Lighting: Updated L-shaped LED headlights with integrated DRLs, a lowered VinFast emblem, and a striking "bat-wing-style" rear LED taillight.
-
Sturdy Hardware: The scooter rides on large 14-inch alloy wheels, suspended by telescopic front forks and gas-charged twin rear shock absorbers. Braking is handled by a front disc brake.
-
Rider Practicality: It features a spacious flat floorboard, a comfortable stepped seat, 10 liters of front storage, and a TFT instrument cluster. It is also expected to include a smart key system with vehicle tracking and anti-theft support.
Expected Battery, Range, and Performance
While VinFast has not officially confirmed the India-specific powertrain details, we can look at the global specifications of the current Viper to understand what to expect:
-
Motor: A 3,000W (4 BHP) BLDC rear hub motor.
-
Top Speed: Capable of reaching up to 70 km/h, ideal for urban commuting.
-
Battery Setup: A 1.5 kWh fixed battery that delivers an estimated range of 82 km on a single charge.
-
Range Extension: Buyers globally have the option to add a 1.15 kWh secondary battery pack, extending the total range by an additional 74 km.
Market Competition and Launch Timeline
If introduced to the Indian market, the VinFast Viper will enter a fiercely competitive segment. It will go head-to-head with established heavyweights such as the Ola S1 Pro, Ather Rizta and 450 series, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and Hero Vida.
When will it launch?
Currently, there is no official launch date. Filing a patent is often a preliminary step for automotive companies to secure their intellectual property. Industry analysts predict that VinFast will focus on rolling out its electric SUVs from the Tamil Nadu facility first. The electric two-wheeler venture will likely follow once the brand has established a strong foothold and dealership network in the country.
