Slate Auto Files Design Patents in India: Is an Affordable, Modular EV Launch Incoming?
In a significant move for the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, the American start-up Slate Auto has officially filed design patents for its modular electric vehicle lineup in India. The filing includes both a fastback styled SUV, dubbed the "Purple Reign," and a versatile electric pickup truck.
A New Approach to Electric Mobility
Slate Auto, a U.S.-based EV manufacturer backed by major investors including Jeff Bezos, has garnered attention for its "bare-bones" approach to electric mobility. The company’s philosophy centers on extreme modularity and affordability, targeting a starting price in the range of USD 20,000 to USD 28,000 (approximately INR 19–23 lakh).
Key highlights of the Slate platform include:
-
Shape-Shifting Design: Using a single platform, the vehicle can be configured as a pickup truck, a fastback SUV, or an open-air vehicle by adding or removing modular body panels.
-
Minimalist Interior: To keep costs low, the vehicles eschew traditional infotainment screens in favor of a "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) setup where a smartphone or tablet serves as the central hub.
-
Performance: All variants are expected to feature a 150kW (201bhp) rear biased motor with two battery pack options, offering ranges of approximately 150 miles (241km) and 240 miles (382km).
Why India Matters
While Slate has not officially confirmed an India launch, the filing of these design patents suggests the company is exploring international expansion. The move comes at a time when the Indian market is seeing increased interest in practical, affordable electric solutions.
By utilizing modular assembly and "Design for Manufacturing," Slate aims to disrupt traditional automotive supply chains. Whether this "anti-Tesla" brand will bring its highly customizable, spartan EVs to Indian roads remains to be seen, but the patent filings are a clear indication of their global ambition.
