Renault

and Nissan, two renowned automobile manufacturers based in France and Japan, respectively, have pledged to invest a total of USD 600 million (approximately INR 5,300 crore) in India. This marks 15 years since their entry into the Tamil Nadu automobile market. These investments will result in the launch of six new vehicle models from the two companies, including two electric vehicles, as announced by Ashwani Gupta, Nissan Global Chief Operating Officer and Member of the Alliance Board.

Currently, both Renault and Nissan manufacture four vehicle models at their Chennai plant located in Oragadam, which is about 45 kilometers from the city. Additionally, according to Gupta, the Renault-Nissan manufacturing facility aims to achieve 100% carbon neutrality by 2025 through the utilization of renewable energy sources.

The new Investments made by Renault and Nissan will result in the creation of 2,000 new job opportunities at the Renault Nissan Research and Development and Business Center located in Mahindra Research City in Singaperumalkoil. At an event attended by Chief Minister M K Stalin, Renault India Country CEO Venkatram Mamillapallee and Guidance Bureau MD and CEO Vishnu Venugopal signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government-promoted nodal agency.

Gupta emphasized that this marks 15 years since Renault-Nissan first announced their plans for a manufacturing facility in Chennai, following the signing of an agreement with the Government of Tamil Nadu. He stated that since then, their factory has produced over 2.4 million cars and exported them to more than 108 countries. The signing of this new agreement with the Tamil Nadu government, according to Gupta, demonstrates the long-term commitment of the two automakers to India and the wider region.

According to Gupta, the company is set to launch six new models, with half being manufactured by Nissan and the other half by Renault. The new vehicles will be built on a shared platform while still retaining each brand’s unique identity. The lineup will consist of four new C-segment SUVs. Furthermore, the release will feature Nissan and Renault’s debut electric vehicles in India.”

Pointing out the success of Nissan Aria and Secure, Gupta revealed that both brands are planning to build two new ‘A’ segment

The update highlights the significant proliferation of exports from India, staging the skilled capability of the manufacturing sector that will work to the benefit of customers, he said.

He further added, "Our plant will boost plant utilization up to 80 percent, securing thousands of jobs in years to come.”

Gupta also claimed that by 2025, the complete power usage of the plant would be based on renewable energy.

“This is an ambitious and important target. As you can see, we are fully committed to the Indian market in electrification.”

Under this agreement, the ownership of Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd will be 51 percent, and Nissan will own 49%.

“This reinforces the partnership for the long-term and will empower the joint ventures with more responsibility and more autonomy,” the company told the press.

Gupta recalled his presence during the inauguration of the firm’s research and development and formation of Renault Nissan Automobile India Pvt Ltd around 17 years back in Chennai and across other parts of the nation.

As per the joint statement, the newly planned products at the Chennai plant would not only cater to the demographic of customers but also increase the plant’s efficiency by 80 percent.

Nissan’s Middle East, Africa, India, Oceania region, and Europe Chairperson Guillaume Cartier stated: “Renault and Nissan are fully committed to the Indian market, committed to electrifying the Indian market, and committed to minimizing our impact on the environment.”

“India was the first Alliance plant, and India will be at the center of this new chapter of the Alliance, with new vehicles, new R&D activities, and new export markets taking our joint operations to the next level.” He said.

“Renault and Nissan have renewed their commitment to India today, and we thank the Tamil Nadu government for their strong partnership and support,” Cartier added.
