India’s Green Revolution: 10,000 AC E-Buses to Hit 116 Cities by 2027 under PM-eBus Sewa

In a major push toward sustainable urban mobility, the Government of India has announced a definitive timeline for its ambitious PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. By the end of 2027, 10,000 air conditioned electric buses (e-buses) will be deployed across 116 cities in 26 states and Union Territories, signaling a massive shift away from fossil fuel dependent public transport.

The announcement, made by Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal in the Rajya Sabha, underscores the government's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and modernizing transport infrastructure in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Bridging the Mobility Gap in Smaller Cities

The PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, originally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2023, specifically targets cities with populations between 3 lakh and 40 lakh. Many of these urban centers have historically struggled with the high capital costs of electric vehicles.

By utilizing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the scheme eases the financial burden on state governments while ensuring high quality service for commuters. To date, agreements for 6,500 buses have already been finalized, with a tranche of 225 buses delivered last month.

Key Highlights of the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme

  • Massive Scale: 10,000 AC e-buses to be operational by 2027, with a follow up scheme planning an additional 35,000 buses.

  • Infrastructure Investment: Over ₹112.46 crore has been sanctioned for "Behind-the-Meter" power infrastructure and civil depot construction.

  • Digital Integration: The introduction of the Sahaj ticket and the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) will allow passengers to use a single card across various modes of transport, including these new e-buses.

  • Environmental Impact: The transition is expected to significantly lower urban air pollution and reduce India’s overall carbon footprint.

Focus on Regional Implementation: The Bihar Update

While the national rollout is gaining momentum, some regions face administrative hurdles. In Bihar, 400 e-buses have been sanctioned for six key cities: Patna (150 buses), Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Purnea (50 buses each).

However, Minister Manohar Lal noted that implementation in the state has seen delays due to the absence of required coordination committees. The central government is reportedly working with state authorities to expedite these setups to ensure residents benefit from the 2027 deadline.

The Road Ahead: 35,000 More Buses Planned

The government isn't stopping at the initial 10,000 units. A second phase is already in the works, aiming to deploy 35,000 additional e-buses. The modalities and guidelines for this next phase are currently being formulated, incorporating lessons learned from the initial rollout to ensure even smoother implementation.

As India accelerates toward its Net Zero goals, the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme stands as a cornerstone of the country's "Green Mobility" strategy, promising cleaner air and more efficient travel for millions of citizens.
