Mahindra’s Chakan Plant Achieves 3 Million Production Milestone, Highlighted by the BE 6 Electric SUV
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has reached a historic manufacturing milestone, officially crossing the 3 million cumulative vehicle production mark at its sprawling Chakan facility. Showcasing the automaker's strategic shift toward electric mobility, the landmark three-millionth vehicle to roll off the assembly line was the all-new Mahindra BE 6 electric SUV.
This milestone not only highlights Mahindra’s growing market dominance but also underscores the rapid acceleration of its manufacturing capabilities and commitment to sustainable, future-ready production.
Record-Breaking Production Pace
The road to 3 million vehicles showcases a massive surge in consumer demand and operational efficiency. While it took 107 months for the Chakan plant to produce its first million vehicles after rolling out its maiden vehicle in December 2009, the production pace has accelerated exponentially.
The most recent one million vehicles were manufactured in a record-breaking 27 months — nearly four times faster than the initial million. This rapid ramp-up reflects growing customer trust and the success of Mahindra's expanding portfolio across both passenger and commercial segments.
A Versatile Global Manufacturing Hub
Spread across 657 acres, the Chakan plant has evolved into one of Mahindra’s most strategically vital assets. It is a highly versatile hub capable of handling complex, multi-model manufacturing.
-
Massive Output: The facility currently produces 19 distinct vehicle models and over 450 variants.
-
Diverse Portfolio: The assembly lines accommodate internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and the brand's growing lineup of electric vehicles (EVs).
-
Export Powerhouse: Chakan doesn't just build for India; it serves as a critical export base, shipping vehicles to global markets including Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
Powered by Industry 4.0 and Advanced Automation
To achieve this scale and agility, Mahindra has heavily integrated Industry 4.0 technologies into the Chakan plant's DNA. The facility utilizes artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G connectivity, and digital traceability to ensure world-class quality control.
The manufacturing process is highly automated, deploying approximately 1,500 robots. This technology allows Mahindra to achieve over 98% automation in critical operational areas such as the body shop, robotic painting, and sealer applications. Furthermore, real-time weld-integrity monitoring and 3D component scanning ensure that strict quality gateways are met for every vehicle.
Setting Benchmarks in Sustainable Manufacturing
As Mahindra scales its electric vehicle production, it is simultaneously minimizing its environmental footprint. The Chakan facility is a benchmark for green manufacturing in the automotive sector:
-
Renewable Energy: Over 50% of the plant's total energy requirements are met through renewable sources. Crucially, the entire EV manufacturing operation runs on 100% renewable energy.
-
Water Positive: The plant returns 131% of the water it consumes back to nature.
-
Zero Waste: The facility holds a certified "Zero Waste to Landfill" status, underpinning Mahindra’s commitment to responsible manufacturing.
The rollout of the BE 6 electric SUV as the three-millionth vehicle is a fitting symbol for the Chakan plant's next chapter. As Mahindra continues to invest in advanced technology and sustainable practices, the Chakan facility remains at the heart of its mission to build world-class vehicles for India and the global market.
