Central Govt Approves ₹63.12 Cr Grant for 335 EV Charging Stations in Kerala under PM E-DRIVE

In a major boost to green mobility, the Central Government has sanctioned a grant of ₹63.12 crore to Kerala for the establishment of 335 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This initiative, launched under the flagship PM E-DRIVE (PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement) scheme, aims to eliminate range anxiety and accelerate the transition to sustainable transport across the state.

KSEB to Lead the Charge

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has been designated as the nodal agency for the implementation of this project. To ensure a robust and accessible network, KSEB is focusing on a mix of public and private participation.

  • Strategic Locations: The 335 stations will be strategically placed at high traffic zones, including National Highways, city centers, shopping malls, and market complexes.

  • Heavy Vehicle Support: A significant portion of the grant is dedicated to high capacity charging hubs. These hubs are designed to cater to heavy commercial vehicles, including e-trucks and interstate e-buses.

  • Public Private Partnership: KSEB has already invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from private Charge Point Operators (CPOs). Under this model, the government offers up to 80% subsidy on upstream infrastructure costs like transformers and cabling.

What is the PM E-DRIVE Scheme?

The PM E-DRIVE scheme is a ₹10,900 crore initiative by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, running from October 2024 to March 2026. It replaces the earlier FAME-II program with a sharper focus on:

  1. Mass Adoption: Incentivizing nearly 25 lakh e-2 wheelers and 3.2 lakh e-3 wheelers.

  2. Infrastructure: Allocating ₹2,000 crore specifically for public fast charging networks.

  3. Modernization: Creating a unified "Super App" for EV users to locate, book, and pay for charging sessions seamlessly.

Impact on Kerala’s EV Ecosystem

Kerala currently leads several Indian states in EV penetration per capita. The addition of 335 stations is expected to:

  • Boost Consumer Confidence: Widespread charging access encourages private car buyers to switch from internal combustion engines (ICE).

  • Support Logistics: With dedicated e-truck charging corridors, the state's logistics sector can transition to zero emission fleets.

  • Grid Stability: KSEB is integrating these stations with advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to manage peak load and ensure 24/7 reliability.

"This grant is a milestone for Kerala’s 'Vision 2031' for sustainable power. By building the infrastructure today, we are ensuring a cleaner, greener tomorrow for the entire state," said a senior KSEB official.
