BYD Launches 2nd Gen Blade Battery and Megawatt Flash Charging: 1,000km Range and 5 Minute Refills
BYD’s second generation Blade battery officially debuts today, promising to revolutionize the EV industry with 1,000km+ range and ultra fast charging capabilities.
Global NEV leader BYD has officially pulled the wraps off its highly anticipated second generation Blade battery and megawatt flash charging technology. Launched at a dedicated event in Shenzhen on March 5, 2026, the new battery architecture aims to eliminate range anxiety and charging bottlenecks, setting a new benchmark for the electric vehicle industry.
The 2nd-Gen Blade Battery: Breaking the 1,000km Barrier
The flagship 2026 Yangwang U7 sedan will be the first production vehicle to feature the new cell to body (CTB) integrated 2nd gen Blade battery. This new generation offers significantly higher energy density compared to its 2020 predecessor.
Equipped with a massive 150 kWh battery pack, the Yangwang U7 achieves a certified pure electric range of 1,006 kilometers. According to Hu Xiaoqing, GM of Yangwang’s sales division, this technology successfully balances the "impossible triangle" of high horsepower, long distance range, and ultra fast charging speeds.
Megawatt Flash Charging: 400km in 5 Minutes
The most disruptive element of the launch is BYD’s new megawatt flash charging system. To support these high performance batteries, BYD has begun deploying a network of next generation charging piles featuring a maximum output of 2,100 kilowatts (2.1 MW).
Key performance metrics of the new charging tech include:
-
Extreme Speed: Replenishing 400 km of range in just 5 minutes.
-
Thermal Management: Enhanced cooling systems to manage the high heat generated during megawatt level transfers.
-
Infrastructure: Large scale deployment of these cyan colored, T shaped charging stations is already underway.
Strategic Move Amid Market Fluctuations
The timing of this "disruptive technology" launch is critical. Following a 41% year on year sales dip in February 2026 partly due to seasonal holidays and shifting policy support BYD is leveraging its R&D prowess to regain domestic market momentum.
In addition to the battery tech, the event also saw the debut of the 2026 Yangwang U8 and U8L, the BYD Datang (the new flagship SUV of the Dynasty series), and the updated Denza Z9GT, which boasts a 1,036 km range.
Why the 2nd-Gen Blade Battery Matters
Since its debut in 2020, the original Blade Battery became famous for its safety (passing the nail penetration test) and LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) durability. The second generation maintains these safety standards while pushing the boundaries of LFP energy density to compete directly with high end NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) batteries.
