New 'Baby' Defender Sport EV Set for 2027 Debut: Everything We Know
The legendary Land Rover Defender is preparing for its most significant transformation yet. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is "well advanced" in the development of an all-new, smaller sibling to the iconic 4x4, widely expected to be named the Defender Sport.
This new entry-level model will not only be the smallest in the lineup but will also mark a historic milestone as the first fully electric vehicle (EV) to carry the Defender nameplate.
A New Era for the Defender Brand
Under JLR’s "House of Brands" strategy, Defender has transitioned from a single model into a standalone luxury brand. The upcoming Defender Sport will be the first entirely new product launched under this new structure, joining the existing 90, 110, and 130 body styles.
While smaller in stature, the "Baby Defender" is being designed to uphold the rugged reputation of its larger siblings. Defender brand director Mark Cameron has promised that the new model will be "class-leading" in the attributes that define the brand, specifically focusing on its "go-anywhere" capability and "built-to-last" DNA.
Technical Specs : The EMA Platform
The Defender Sport will be built on JLR’s new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA). This platform is a departure from the MLA architecture used for the full-size Range Rover and is shared with the upcoming electric successors to the Range Rover Evoque and Velar.
Key technical highlights expected for the Defender Sport include:
-
Dimensions : Approximately 4.5 meters in length, making it more compact and maneuverable for urban environments while maintaining a commanding presence.
-
Powertrain : A dual-motor setup is highly likely to ensure permanent four-wheel drive, a non-negotiable feature for any vehicle wearing the Defender badge.
-
Off-Roading : While the EMA platform’s underfloor battery may slightly limit wheel articulation compared to the current Defender 90, JLR engineers are focused on software and torque delivery to ensure it remains a formidable off-roader.
Design and Efficiency Challenges
Designing an electric Defender presents a unique challenge: aerodynamics. The classic Defender silhouette—upright, boxy, and bluff—is the antithesis of EV efficiency. However, Cameron noted that maintaining the brand's visual identity is a priority, stating, "My job is to make sure we retain Defender’s DNA, otherwise we become another SUV brand."
Release Date and Future Outlook
The new Defender Sport is expected to make its global debut in 2027. While this model spearheads the brand's electric future, JLR remains committed to a "choice of powertrain" strategy. This means that petrol, diesel, and hybrid versions of the larger Defender models will continue to be sold globally to satisfy markets where EV adoption is slower.
As JLR prepares to expand the Defender family, the "Sport" model is just the beginning. Rumors of a Defender pickup truck and even larger variants suggest that the brand is looking to dominate the luxury rugged SUV segment for years to come.
