Ola Electric's Charging Infrastructure: Challenges and Opportunities

As India’s

industry continues to grow the demand for the EV charging infrastructure will also rise. Data on Vahan, the Center's vehicle registration platform, shows that electric vehicle sales reached a record high in India last year, with registrations totalling 15,29,614 units, up 49% from 10,25,123 EVs registered the year before. This increase indicates some successful initial steps taken by the EV industry stakeholders. However, the hurdles are not yet overcome as the heavy demand of energy hunger, charging infrastructure, clean energy, supply chain resilience and much more are yet to be conquered.

has also taken some significant steps to ensure charging sustainability in India. Their scooters boast impressive performance and design, but a crucial aspect of the electric vehicle experience – charging infrastructure – remains a work in progress. The company’s project of installing Hypercharging networks across India indicates the company’s commitment to overcoming challenges and crossing hurdles one by one. Why do we claim that? A Network Taking Shape: Current Landscape and Ambitious Goals


As of today,

charging infrastructure boasts a presence in over 50 Indian cities, offering a network of 224 Hypercharging points and 764 additional charging points. This nascent infrastructure represents a commendable starting point, providing a degree of convenience for Ola scooter owners in urban areas. In April 2021, Ola Electric unveiled its ambitious vision for the future – the aptly named Ola Hypercharger Network. This network aims to be the world's largest and densest electric two-wheeler charging network, encompassing a staggering 10,000 charging points across India.

Hypercharging: Speed at the Forefront


The Ola Hypercharger Network prioritises rapid charging, a significant advantage in a market where range anxiety remains a concern for many potential EV buyers. Notably, Ola's Hyperchargers can add 50% charge to an Ola electric scooter in just 18 minutes, translating to a usable range of approximately 75 km. This swift charging capability significantly reduces the time spent tethered to a charging station, offering greater convenience for riders on the go.


Accessibility: Reaching Every Rider?


While the charging network's rapid growth holds promise, a key challenge lies in ensuring accessibility. The initial rollout primarily targets urban areas, where the majority of Ola's current customer base resides. This disparity presents a hurdle for rural riders who may not have access to nearby charging stations. However, it's important to recognize that this network is in its early stages. As expansion continues, reaching rural regions and bridging the urban-rural divide will be crucial for Ola Electric to truly democratize electric mobility in India.


Time Constraints: A Challenge Partially Met


One inherent limitation of electric vehicles compared to their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts is charging time. While Ola's Hypercharging network significantly mitigates this issue, some riders may still find the process time-consuming. To address this, Ola has cleverly integrated the concept of "anywhere, everywhere" charging with the introduction of their portable charger. This charger offers a full charge (0 to 100%) in approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes, allowing riders to charge their scooters conveniently at home or at their workplace.


Security Concerns: Mitigating Risks in an Unattended Environment


Unlike traditional petrol pumps with dedicated personnel, Ola's charging stations are largely unmanned. This raises concerns about security and potential vandalism. To address this challenge, Ola has adopted a collaborative approach. They invite interested individuals and businesses to host Hypercharging stations, addressing security through a co-ownership model. Additionally, Ola prioritizes responsible location selection for their charging points, opting for well-lit and secure spaces such as IT parks, malls, and cafes.


Non-Removable Batteries: A Hurdle Overcome (Partially)


One of the early limitations associated with Ola's electric scooters was the non-removable nature of their batteries. This meant riders were reliant on charging stations or the scooter's on-board charger. However, Ola has introduced a portable charger that offers a degree of flexibility. While not a complete substitute for a removable battery, the portable charger allows riders to charge their scooters in various locations, addressing this initial limitation to a significant extent.

Temperature Sensitivity: A Minor Hurdle


Ola's Hypercharging technology does come with a minor caveat: temperature sensitivity. The ideal operating temperature for a Hypercharge session is below 30°C. If a scooter's battery temperature exceeds this threshold, the rider may need to wait for it to cool down before initiating charging. This can be a slight inconvenience, especially in India's hot and humid climate. However, it is a safety measure implemented to ensure optimal charging performance and battery longevity.


A Bold Vision for Electric Mobility


Despite the challenges, Ola Electric's commitment to building a robust charging infrastructure is undeniable. Their initial target of establishing 100,000 charging stations across 400 Indian cities may not have been met in the first iteration, but the recent relaunch and ambitious expansion plans demonstrate a renewed focus. This network, once fully established, has the potential to be a game-changer, not only for Ola Electric but for the entire EV ecosystem in India.

Ola Electric's charging infrastructure is a work in progress, but it holds immense promise for the future of electric mobility in India. By addressing accessibility concerns, fostering innovation in charging solutions, and prioritizing security, Ola Electric can create a network that not only serves its own customers but also paves the way for wider EV adoption. This, in turn, can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for India's transportation landscape.


While Ola Electric is at the forefront of building a robust charging network, it is not the only player in the game. Other EV manufacturers and stakeholders have a crucial role to play. Standardized charging protocols and interoperability between different charging networks will be essential for a seamless EV experience. Additionally, continued government support and investment in charging infrastructure will be vital to propel India towards a future powered by clean energy.
