UP becomes the top state in EV registration, surpassing Delhi and Maharashtra

UP is leading India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution with more than four lakh electric vehicles registered in the state. Surpassing Delhi and Maharashtra, having around 1.8 lakh electric vehicles each, UP has acquired the top position in EV registration.

The update is likely a result of the said government’s Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022, which was designed to accelerate EV adoption by establishing robust charging infrastructure in the state. By creating 10 lakh employment and bringing in Rs 30,000 crore in investment, the policy hopes to pave the way for the state's electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem to undergo transformational growth.

The main driver of this momentum was reported to be e-rickshaws, which account for 85% of electric vehicle (EV) sales in the state.

To further support its e-mobility initiatives, Uttar Pradesh has also become the largest beneficiary of the Government of India's Fame I and Fame II (Faster adoption and manufacture of hybrid and electric vehicles in India) schemes.

Recently, the state government has approved the installation of more than 300 new EV charging stations in 16 municipal bodies.

It is expected that Ayodhya will have the most new charging stations. Approximately 33,000 EV chargers are currently available in India, with 35% of them being fast chargers. According to officials, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made building more fast-charging stations and improving the current infrastructure a top priority due to the growing demand.

According to projections, by 2030, India may have 102 million electric cars (EVs). However, according to a study by Alvarez & Marsal, India's current FV-to-public-charger ratio is 135, which is significantly higher than the global ideal of 6–20. According to officials, the Uttar Pradesh government is acting quickly to close the deficit in public infrastructure.
