Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Teased Ahead of India Launch: Debut on January 19
The wait for Toyota’s entry into the mid-size electric SUV segment is almost over. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has dropped the first official teaser of the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV (likely to be called the Urban Cruiser BEV), confirming its imminent arrival. Reports suggest the electric SUV will make its global debut in India on January 19, just days after the global showcase of its sibling, the Maruti e-Vitara.
Here is everything we know so far about the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV’s design, battery specifications, range, and expected price.
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Rivals and Expected Price
Upon launch, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will enter a fiercely competitive mid-size EV market. Its primary rivals will include the Tata Curvv.ev, MG ZS EV, the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV, and its own sibling, the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara.
Expected Price : ₹ 20 lakh to ₹ 25 lakh (ex-showroom).
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV: Design and Exterior
The first teaser video gives us a glimpse of the front fascia, which stays true to the Urban SUV Concept unveiled last year. Unlike the Maruti e-Vitara, the Toyota EV features a unique visual identity aligned with Toyota’s global electric lineup.
Key design highlights spotted in the teaser include :
-
Slim LED DRLs : Sharp, eyebrow-shaped daytime running lights connected by a light bar or chrome strip.
-
Closed-off Grille : A piano-black, blanked-out grille typical of EVs.
-
Muscular Bumper : A rugged front bumper with a distinct skid plate, giving it a robust SUV stance.
-
Alloy Wheels : New aerodynamic alloy wheels distinct from the Maruti version.
Battery, Range, and Performance
Under the skin, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV sits on the HEARTECT-e skateboard platform, co-developed with Suzuki. It will share its powertrain options with the Maruti e-Vitara.
Buyers can expect two battery pack options :
-
49 kWh Battery : Expected to offer a range of approx. 400 km.
-
61 kWh Battery : The long-range version claiming over 500 km on a single charge.
While the base variants will be front-wheel drive (FWD), top-spec trims are expected to feature an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system—a key differentiator in this segment—incorporating a dual-motor setup for better traction and off-road capability.
Interior and Features
The cabin is expected to mirror the layout of the e-Vitara but with Toyota’s upholstery and badging. The feature list is likely to be premium to compete with tech-heavy rivals.
-
Dual-Screen Setup : A floating infotainment system joined with a digital instrument cluster.
-
Comfort : Ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a wireless charger.
-
Safety : A 360-degree camera, electric parking brake with auto hold, and Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.
With the production set to begin at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, deliveries are expected to commence shortly after the official price announcement later this year.
