Tata Motors plans to upskill management to be at top of EV industry

Tata Motors

, one of India's top automakers, is implementing a comprehensive upskilling plan in an effort to maintain its leadership position in the electric vehicle revolution and the changing automotive environment. The upskilling plan entails imparting technical skills, functional knowledge, and key management and leadership qualities in order to develop a workforce capable of managing cutting-edge technology.

The corporation has set a lofty goal of empowering more than 50% of its personnel with cutting-edge auto tech skills within 5 years. This is in addition to increasing the contribution of its EV portfolio to sales from 12% to 25% by the end of FY2027 and to 50% by 2030.

According to Sitaram Kandi, vice president of human resources for passenger vehicles and

electric cars

, "a constantly evolving industry like ours requires consistent training and upskilling to stay ahead of the curve and future ready."

In a press event today, the business revealed that 3,40,000 hours were devoted to specialist training and development for its workers in FY23.

Tata Motors makes sure that all of its personnel acquire professional qualifications in Connected, Electric, Shared, and Safe (CESS) technologies through strategic partnerships with leading companies in the sector, including ARAI, Bosch, Mathworks, SAE, Tata Technologies Limited, and others. The advanced subjects covered by these certificates include ADAS, Battery Technology, Cybersecurity, and others.

With the help of partnerships with universities like BITS Pilani, MIT-ADT University Pune, and others, the automaker is able to provide workers with specialised programmes that help them hone their technical, professional, and leadership abilities.

This effort is to give shopfloor technicians the tools they need to pursue a "Diploma in Engineering" with a focus on auto electrical and electronics, mechatronics, and specialised welding abilities - credentials that are essential for progress in the automobile sector.

In order to upskill every employee at the recently purchased Ford India operation in Sanand, Tata Motors teamed up with Gujarat's Ganpat University in January 2023. Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing and other cutting-edge manufacturing technologies are the subject of educational programmes created in partnership with Tata Motors.

Over 820 workers are actively pursuing these courses, which started in February 2023.

According to the corporation, only women employees handle and supervise the TCF assembly line at their Pune Plant.
