Park and charge: Porsche introduces wireless charging
Porsche is planning to modernise EV charging with its new inductive 11 kW wireless system. Scheduled to debut in 2026, the technology features a compact one-box base plate that allows effortless charging without cables. It will first be offered as an optional feature with the upcoming electric Cayenne.
The device is small since, according to Porsche, no control unit or wall box needs to be installed other than the base plate that is placed in the parking spot.
In addition, Porsche is also planning to present the luminous-painted prototype of the new technology at the IAA Mobility in Munich. Meanwhile, the Cayenne Electric is expected to be launched at the end of 2025.
Porsche has accomplished this remarkable feat of wireless AC charging with an 11 kW charge, which can achieve a transfer efficiency of 90%.
In the press release, the company highlighted the fact that 75% of Porsche customers prefer charging their vehicle at home. The press release of the company read, “the user-friendly Porsche Wireless Charging floor plate (length/width/height: 117/78/6 centimetres) can be installed in a garage, carport or open-air parking space and connected to the mains,” electrive reported.
The 50kg floor plate has WLAN and LTE modules for infrastructure support and software updates. With its CE and UL certifications, it satisfies safety and environmental protection standards in the US and the EU. As per the company, the technology is also waterproof and snowproof, making it appropriate for outdoor use.
To charge the vehicle, the plate, the board firstly scans for the car’s position by using wideband technology and then directs the driver to the appropriate parking space. The vehicle's secondary coil, which acts as a receiver unit, then generates alternating current as a result of the magnetic field. This is subsequently converted into direct current via a rectifier so that it may be stored in the high-voltage battery of the Cayenne, the release added.
