NIO ET9 introduces Steer-By-Wire Innovation
NIO, a Chinese automaker, has announced the incorporation of ZF’s cutting-edge steer-by-wire system in its flagship electric car ET9. The newly by-wire chassis technology removes the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels, the EV report reported.
Instead of a steer-by-wire system, the technology uses a torque feedback unit to provide control and steering sensation through a set of actuators and sensors.
The system receives the natural feedback from the road and adjusts the steering ratio dynamically. Additionally, the design eliminates the conventional steering column, providing enhanced safety in the event of an accident.
Citing Dr. Peter Holdmann from the ZF’s Board of Management the EV report reported, “We are supplying customers with the steering of the future. With our production-ready steer-by-wire steering system, we are launching the era of the software-defined vehicle. With an entire portfolio of innovative by-wire technologies, we are a sought-after supplier and a key driver of future-oriented chassis technologies.” Similarly, NIO’s Principal Chief Engineer Danilo Teobaldi remarked, “At NIO, we are committed to delivering groundbreaking innovations that redefine the premium driving experience. Steer-by-wire technology is a key enabler of software-defined vehicles, offering enhanced driving comfort, uncompromised dynamics, and future-proof technology.”
The report claims that the company's recently established Chassis Solutions Division has already secured major contracts, including one from a top global manufacturer to supply brake-by-wire systems for almost five million vehicles.
