Kozhikode in urgent need of EV charging station ramp-up, autorickshaws in distress

Kozhikode is in need of extensive installation of electric vehicle charging stations since many electric autorickshaw drivers are facing problems after opting for EVs following the Central and State governments push to clean energy, The Hindu reported.

As per the report, many EV chargers installed by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) on lampposts are not functional and require immediate attention. Less than ten of these charging stations are currently operational throughout Kozhikode city, which are significantly less than the actual needs, according to representatives of the autorickshaw drivers' union.

Citing an autorickshaw driver and member of the Kozhikode District Auto-Taxi Light Motor Workers’ Union,T.V. Noushad, The Hindu reported, “There are close to 2,500 electric autorickshaws operating across Kozhikode city alone and the lack of accessible charging facilities affects daily operations and undermines the government’s stated goal of promoting pollution-free public transport.”

Mr. Noushad stated that the drivers’ unions approached the ministers directly after receiving a recommendation from the KSEB regarding technical issues they encountered when opening new charging points. He claims that the project can only become a reality with KSEB approval, which in turn requires final clearance from the State government.

Drivers associated with different trade unions highlight that the KSEB could conveniently use vacant areas beneath flyovers to set up new charging points. It is said that these sites offer secure areas for charging equipment and enable drivers to park without blocking traffic or pedestrians.

The report found that autorickshaw drivers bought electric vehicles on the assurance that they will be provided by adequate charging infrastructure by the local authorities and the State government within a few years. However, since the promise remains unfulfilled, many drivers are now compelled to cut short their trips.

Mahesh Chathoth, a tourism entrepreneur from Mavoor, suggests that the government should support the establishment of fully-equipped charging stations in the private or cooperative sectors as a solution to the crisis. He adds that while the State has a few charging stations, their limited quantity demonstrates the necessity for improved interventions, The Hindu added.

The report added that the KSEB has submitted proposals to establish charging stations at 128 sites across Kerala as part of the Centre’s PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement Scheme. In addition, they add that such modern stations will also be designed to accommodate heavy trucks.
